Clunking sound from crank
I was searching for what could be causing the vibration breaking the S/G bracket when I found something interesting. I was checking big pulley on crank when I noticed some movement. I realized the crank shaft has around a 1/8 inch play in and out of block. I could grab primary and push in with a clunk sound then pull it back to another clunk sound.
Is that normal or could that be my vibration problem?? |

I'm no expert, but I vote "not normal".

Re: Clunking sound from crank
Your end play should be .015. Any more and there is a problem.

Re: Clunking sound from crank
Threw my back out so a lot of sitting with a heating pad the last few days.
Anyway wanted to give an update on crank play. When I finally could get under cart to measure the play is more around 1/16 in. Aaron informed me this is normal to allow for heat expansion. Whew thank goodness because I really do love that little 460. |

Re: Clunking sound from crank
I won't argue with anyone over this subject - a 1/16 or .0625 is way to much end play - heat expansion or not. I would get a second opinion - Russell Thompson from NR racing would be a good choice. I can't pinpoint any big block information but the gx200 has a end play of .007-.018. To much end play in the crank will give you a possible knocking sound.
