Please don't think this question is dumb
Hi all, I'm a noob here and learning all I can about building carts before I buy one. I have access to a Yamaha 1999 G16. The stocker is still in it and that's old in my book so I'm looking at a Vegas motor for it. I'm still not sure whether I want a big block or a clone but my question pertains to both. This is where I fear sounding dumb
Are these replacement motors "pedal start" motors or do you start them and they run like a car / tractor motor until yo turn them off? |

If you want your cart to be pedal start, get a recoil motor (one with the rope pull on the side).
If you want your cart to be key start, get the motor without the recoil. Is your cart currently pedal start? I only know about the cart I just worked on and its a g9 pedal start. Fairly new to the cart world myself. I have two g9s, one of them I converted to a lifan clone this summer... still fussing with the airbox. The whole project is very addictive - in a good (bad for pocket book) way. I wanted to keep the pedal start so I bought a recoil motor. |

You can make it either way you want it, using your factory starter/generator and buying a recoil motor without electric starter and use the gas pedal to start it or you can buy one with the electric starter and set it up to use with a key, pretty much what justwondering is saying.. I think you can also wire up your factory starter/gen to work with a key with a little work..

My lifan clone is key start and also has pull start incase the battery dies from leaving something on. If you do a lot of trail riding key start is the way to go so the engine isn't turning off and then back on all the time imo.

The Vegascarts engine comes with only the black kill coil wire on it. So how ever your cart was set up it will remain the same using your carts S/G. You can do nothing and use a low idle to shut it off or wire a separate kill switch circuit or do the 5 pin bosch set up in the sticky done by Sho 305.

Re: Please don't think this question is dumb
Just remember with clones unless you buy the more expensive 18A charge you get no or only a 3A charge on elec start models. People report having to charge the battery once in a while. If you use your stock cart starter/generator it will charge 15A like it does now. If you do keep it you have to use a cart clutch with the pulley on it, or vegas has a pulley you can put behind a 1" clutch. Because cart clutches are 30mm taper and you need an adapter to use on a 1" engine crank, 1" clutches do not have the pulley. Most twins have a 20A alternator or similar.
I like the pedal start because I use the cart for yard work and local running around, it is much faster to jump on and go. It has never been a problem trail riding with it. I do have it set so I can hold my foot on the pedal and it idles, if I want. Another issue is it can be hard to do with cart clutches as most of them drag the belt so you can not shift while running. Some other clutches are better and you can shift running, but you have to buy a different clutch to get one. I could put a bypass switch on my pedal and it would idle long as key was on, but I never bothered. |
