Default Honda or Briggs Vangard??? Help

I'm going to buy a new engine for my Workhorse, Northern Tool sells Briggs, Honda , and Kohler. I've decided between the Briggs or the Honda, Briggs 23 or the Honda 20. Honda is $300,00 cheaper, 3 less Horse Power. I'm not going to modify the engine just install it and use it in the Workhorse,, my MUCH used yard Cart. The Briggs 18 in it now is very tired so either will be a noticeable improvement,,,,,so what does the group recommend?

raydhd, I read about 50 reviews on the Harbor Freight engines, they go about 50/50 on how good it is, some say it never stopped smoking, some says it's the greatest since sliced bread. I pretty sure about the Briggs,,, not so much about the Honda, and a little less about Harbor Freight but I'm definitely open to opinions about all. I'm retiring next year and I'm not going to be making many large purchases after that.

The Honda engine design is what almost all those "clone" engines are copying. Solid, reliable, and parts are readily available when needed. The Briggs is also a time tested and reliable design, but to me it doesn't seem as smooth. For a yard cart the 3 hp difference might never be noticed, but to me the $300 would.
Just my 2 cents...

I've used all three, and any would work for ya buddy. But I'm a little confused.....your not going to touch it? My first, a Honda was smooth and powerfull out of the box. Briggs are ment to be "played with", the HF was adequate out of the box with a few tweaks. Good luck on your choice

I think some of the newer Honda engines have an electronic rev limiter that could cramp ones style...

All my farm and barn equipment that use an engine have Hondas. Asked the companies why not Briggs? I was told most of the service calls the dealers did while under warranty was engine related and after they switched the frequency was cut by 2/3rds. Very well built and few problems in my opinion and I have a couple with 4000 hrs plus on them.

You can stick a rev kit in the vanguard, that reason alone I would get it. Its also an Asian design engine while Honda just came out with new engines that one is really different the head and cylinder is one piece and they have rev limits. I've had good luck with Kohlers in mowers (all stock), though I don't know what ones are raced or what parts are out there but they do race them. The lifan or predator would be much cheaper, I don't think they are junk or anything some little issues have been reported and I don't know your budget. You may hit some small issues that take a little tinkering with those but for stock application should be minimal if at all. They are mostly a copy of the old honda twin.
