V-twin Vanguard Ideas
So I have yet to acquire a cart and I see that there are tons of conversion ideas between the VC, vanguards, and various others. I am in the need for speed and why no matter what the cart I get has will be getting yanked. I am thinking about looking for a vanguard personally. Mainly because I like the engines and never have any issues with them in my other machines. I was possibly thinking about going with a bigger engine, 23 hp to be exact. It would seem as though the bigger engines would have clearance issues. Where is the cheapest place to buy the needed parts for the 23 hp. Not the cheapest kit but the individual items needed like rev kit, possibly a cam, starters, pushrods, etc, maybe you have better sources than I am using. A used engine will more or likely be my starting point, craigslist treasure. Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Re: V-twin Vanguard Ideas
Let me know where you find the cheapest 23 vanny at as I have an 18 but rather do a 23 and put high speed gears in it also.

Re: V-twin Vanguard Ideas
CPP and Vegas Carts are sponsors here, go to the sponsor page and look them up. They are both great to deal with.
Many have chosen the 23hp engine as a starting point, and yes clearance can be an issue for some carts. Do some searching and reading here and you'll get a good feel for it. With more speed, comes the need for better stopping power. I recommend a Jakes LT front end with disc brakes. Can't beat the ride and feel of that front end, and having front and rear brakes is much safer. Good luck! |

Re: V-twin Vanguard Ideas
Aside from the cart places Vegas and CPP, for the vanguard engine itself your best bet is the goKart and lawnmower racing places that race them the most. Just beware that a race setup for something may not be the best setup for a cart, generally you don't want to radical of an engine in a cart. Vanguard parts are usually more than clone parts so expect that.
One of the best things to do is search through the BB forum here and read other threads on it, there is a ton of info here. There is all the info on using the best stock parts to start with, then you can move to aftermarket. Vanny is very popular race engine and a great choice, just make sure you can budget for it or have time to search out deals used. |

Re: V-twin Vanguard Ideas
Why not do a predator 670 instead of a vanguard. I believe it is basically the same engine at a fifth the price.

Re: V-twin Vanguard Ideas
I like your way of thinking, go big or go home!!!
I will put my 23hp V-Twin against them all when it comes to reliability and day in and day out hard service!! If there's a motor that can't be killed, give it to me, we'll see how strong that thing is, I cannot speak for VC I know they make a great product, I just bought my V-Twin before Vegas carts became popular. I have literally tried to kill the V-Twin and it won't die!!! If anybody can give it a testament to a motor it would be me, and I know people that have very good luck and swear by the VC's being dependable.... But at the end of the day I'm just a V-Twin guy, who is happy that I chose Vanguard! 23's. ROCK!!!! |

IMHO Twins do sound cool and they are larger. For me in this cart the built up 420 runs great and has more power than the cart should have, it is similar to a VC460, they didn't have the 460 yet when I did the swap. It was cheap and I was dealing with other finance things so it was a great deal of fun for low cost. If I built up an offroad cart with good suspension I'd likely want to put a twin in it as that cart would be more capable than this one. I also use this for utility, I never built it for all out trails, so it fits the cart fine (still has pedal start too). The VC460 level is still much more power than stock cart, even the other cart I did with stock 420 has maybe double the power with only jetting and exhaust it just does not go as fast it floats the valves at about 4300. Some VC460 can hit 6K rpm though that is not recommended for very long by most. I do wish I had the 10 bolt block a couple of my block bolts came out the other day throwing big roosters in the snow and it started dripping oil. Now I have to clean and loctite them again or get studs for it. So I would press anyone to really think about what they want from the cart, what they will use it for, your budget, and try to pick the right package for your needs to maximize the fun you will have with it. |

Re: V-twin Vanguard Ideas
If you have the budget for a Vanguard 23, they are an amazing engine. You can usually find them on Ebay for $1300-$1500 shipped to your door. Then buy the high rev kit and performance cam shaft from our sponsors.
Remember that V-twins need a mandatory 4" lift for fitment on ANY cart. If speed was my main focus, I'd go with the Yamaha G16. It all depends on what your needs are vs your expectations vs you budget. |
