Default Oil pump

http://www.ecotrons.com/pictures/det...e-of-oil-pump/

I wonder if this pump would pump oil through a large filter, say for a few minutes at a time only. Just to clean up the fines that a splash lubed engine can accumulate in the oil. I would be more comfortable in the use of my splash lubed engine if I could run the oil through a filter from time to time. I don't think it would be necessary to continue but from the sounds of this it would be capable of that too. Maybe even run the oil through a small oil cooler as well on those hot 100 plus degree days

I notice they also sell an oil cooler too. I'd be more inclined in just using a small fin and tube cooler though

What do you all think?

ETA: Looking at the specs it looks like the max pressure of this pump would be 10.152 PSI at 0 flow. Plenty of pressure to circulate oil through a full flow oil filter

I'm thinking of the oil pump wired to come on only when the engine starter solenoid is picked up. In other words pretty much any time the engine isn't idling. I'm using the S/G for start and keeping the battery charged so If I connect the oil pump to the same contacts that closes when I push the gas pedal would give me that. My generator should be able to keep the battery charged even with the added draw, (1.3 amp max,) of the oil pump. Possibly even putting an on off switch in the circuit in case I want to turn it off sometimes
I'm never driving my cart in the dark so I never have the lights on and I don't have a stereo on it either so the only draw I have is the starter starting the engine. Lots of time I'll be running the engine for many minutes per start, most times hours even

I'm using 48 oz of 5w30 mobil1 EP oil in this engine with a tad over an ounce of Lucas ZPPD additive

I've been looking for an oil pump for this since I put this engine in my cart and following the link that Shepard linked us to in the EFI thread I found this pump. Thank you Sir:

I'll sleep on this a few days and make up my mind if I want to spend the money on this pump. I really would like to add this to my 460 engine

I have a small fin and tube cooler from a power steering unit that is NOS that I would feel comfortable in using. Be possible for me to put a sleeve over it during the cooler months so as to not cool the oil too much and cause a low temp problem such as condensation in the oil not being boiled off due to too low oil temps

I had to do this with the oil cooler on my old VW bug air cooled engines oil cooler system I added to it back 40 years ago

I sent them an email asking if what I am wanting to do would be ok. The reply was yes that the pump would be good for that as well.

The whole idea is solid using an electric pump. I came up with the idea of the little gear pump but not like any we've talked about. I was thinking of a setup on the clutch or pto side of the engine --- mount the pump to a thin 1/8 inch plate -- bolted to the accessory bolt holes. To drive the pump --- a micro pulley for a 1/4" O-Ring [I'd make both pulleys] one made to fit behind the 780 drive clutch and one on the oil pump. I can get remote Harley oil filter mount for a known filter full flow filter.
Yours is a lot simpler then mine. It's cool when others help sort out build issues. I'm thinking the return should go into the top of the valve cover. This would help cooling to a small point but it would add extra lube to the roller arms.

Thanks
The galley that the pushrods are in, is it pretty open at the bottom? I've never opened one of these engines up so I'm not sure what they look like inside. I like the idea of returning the oil to the valve cover as any added oil up there would have to quieten the valve train some. How much oil would flow down from the head without pooling?

I've got a Grizzly Lathe/mill but I wouldn't make a pimple on a machinist hind end on my best day let alone make something I'd trust to put on my engine turning upwards of 4000 rpms

This little oil pump, according to them, is designed to pump oil up to 10 psi. I'd only have the pressure of pushing the oil through a big full flow oil filter. I've got a remote oil filter base left over from my VW days that I can use to spin the filter on. I can mount it where I'd have room for a big wix 51515 filter that would, with the cooler I have, put me to a tad over 2 qts oil total. If I had the filter on and utilizing the cooler in the hotter months I'd be comfortable in going 50 hours between oil changes, considering I use mobil1 EP 5w30 oil, possibly even a longer interval.

I'm not even sure I'd need to add this oil cooler I have as the added capacity of the filter and the added surface area of that filter might just be enough to ensure the oil not raise over 212 degrees even running hard on a hot 100 degree day. It was rare this past summer to see oil temps above 215 as it is now.

In my application I'm thinking I'd put a switch so I can turn the oil pump on and off and during my runs in the cooler months not turn the pump on until the oil temp came up to 180 or so. Which on my mushroom hunting trips would be about one half of the time I'm out. That would keep the oil pretty clean of any fines I'm thinking. I've got an adjustable snap thermo disk that I could mount to the engine block to let it turn the pump on and off to make it automatic.

There would be many times in these cooler months where I wouldn't feel I'd need to turn the pump on at all, for more than a few minutes right before I shut down, that is. What I really like though is the idea to put the oil return in the valve cover so it would be bathing the rockers to valve contact area to cut down on noise. I like that idea. That to me would be a twofer

Then again I may be way over thinking all this LOL
