Broken axles
A buddy has a 2000 villager ds cart and about 2-3 months ago broke an axle on the passenger side of his cart. He got it replaced with a new axle and the new one has now broken again in under 3 months. Cart is not overloaded and used 100% on the street and is florida street legal. He cannot figure out why it keeps breaking the axles, specifically the one on the passenger side. The axle was replaced by a golf cart repair shop so I don't have much more info on the new one. Is there aftermarket ones that are better or worse? Maybe he just got a bad axle? The first axle lasted 17 years!! Cart has Jake's long travel lift kit and Honda 20 hp motor swap kit also made by Jake's. Stock club car clutches. He does have a high speed gear set installed in the rear end. Also has mechanical disc brakes on the rear axle. Posted in multiple sections because I don't know which it goes in and might get more response in one area than another.

Re: Broken axles
That axle is **ap! A real made axle would not have done that. Is there a warranty on the "new" one?
My axles are over 12 years old, off-road all the time, big block....no issues at all. |

Re: Broken axles
How wide of a wheel spacer is used? From the pictures of the machine on the trailer the tires stick out much more then normal. There's a lot of talk about the subject from those who run them -- I use them. But if you understand physics -- the further the load is from the bearing -- the higher the load pressure on the support [bearing]. Now -- what was the source of the new axle? If you didn't do the work yourself how are you sure it's really a new axle -- not a used one? The back side of that "new" axle rusted pretty bad in 90 days.

Re: Broken axles
Doubt the axle was broken by torque. A break like that will twist the whole axle shaft some before breaking it. You can see it easily along the forging part line. An outboard vertical load will also deform the whole axle slightly before breaking the hub off. Garbage china axle perhaps?
