High Speed Gears
I ordered a gear set from CPP, they had the best price. 8 to 1 ratio for my G2. The other day I had done a speed test, 30 mph came real easy. I put the pedal down to the floor and it jumped right up to 36 mph - then ran out of gas. That problem has been fixed. With standard gears - 25-10-12 street tires I got an easy 36 mph. I'm hoping to get 50+ mph after the gear set is installed. My tach needs to be adjusted so I can have an accurate engine rpm reading. I've rework the steering and now have a double a arm suspension that is fully adjustable. The suspension is been lowered so its much more stable then the original setup. The brakes are disc all the way around. The cart has a real parking brake, not a pedal lock.

Re: High Speed Gears
I have a spare transaxle that I want to overhaul. This will give me a chance to change the bearings and pull the old speed governor. I bought a new shifter shaft -- I want to make a neutral detent so it has 3 clicks instead of 2 - forward - neutral - reverse. Most just float the shift handle in the middle.

Re: High Speed Gears
You gave me an idea. I have a good '96 DS transaxle that I picked up at the recyclers for 20 bucks a couple three years ago when the price of scrap metal was up and everyone was selling all the old stuff they had lying around. Anyways only difference I can see between it and the one in my '86 is the governor lever setup. Since I'm not using the governor anyway and I'd like to have high speed gears that transaxle would be a good candidate to put the gears in and have it all ready for swapping out in my '86. Swap would only take a day or so once I got all the mods done. New brake shoes etc.
I recently purchased an incline/slope meter and have been taking it with me on my 'in the woods' jaunts and I find that I have a lot of 18 - 22 degree hills to go up and down. Need more brakes for descending but this 460 takes to the hills like a mountain goat. No problems going up other than an occasional wheel spin due to it being so rocky around here. As long as the cart has enough weight in front to follow the front wheels when I turn them on some of those inclines I feel I'm not about to flip over backwards. I don't think I'll be going up any steeper hills though |

Re: High Speed Gears
Is there any special tools needed to do the gear change, like a gear puller or press? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a set also.

Re: High Speed Gears
Is it as simple as it looks? I was just checking out your G2 Project build pics - 1st page, is there anything holding those gears in place other than the bearings on the opposing cover?

Re: High Speed Gears
I don't have a video, but it is as easy as you think. You have the right idea.

Re: High Speed Gears
I've rebuilt a few transmissions in my days, I'll take pictures as I do the rebuild. It shouldn't be too complicated, if you've never did one don't be scared to try. I learned something from NewGuy I didn't know about using a case gasket to control clearances. I would just use case sealer like Yamabond 4.
