6:1 or 8:1 High speed gear set EZGO

I was looking for the best place to put this thread, and since it seems most of the talk on High speed gear sets have been in here, Im going with it. Mods move if you feel the need.

I have the stock robins 350 with 11hp, want more speed but my motor is running great and its so quiet. So I want to put one of the higher gears, Most driving is on paved roads and I live in SFL so no idea what a hill is.

Has anybody run the 6:1 gear set on a stock motor or got any info how it would do, don't mind losing some torque but don't want the motor lugging so bad I don't gain any speed. I really don't want to settle for the 8:1 if I don't have too.

Also its hard to find any good number on mph gained per each set.

I don't think you'll get any good answers here. Everybody here adds high speed gears to high performance engines - not stock engines. With only 11 hp I would go with the 8 to 1 gearing. If you go with 6 to 1 gearing I feel your setting yourself up for an engine upgrade. Try driving your car starting in 3rd gear.

1st gear = stock gearing
1nd gear = 8 to 1 gearing
3rd gear = 6 to 1 gearing

I have 25+ horse power and with the tires I run ---- 8 to 1 gearing should give me 50+ mph. I would carefully study my tire options. The right size tire can change your mph a lot.

I knew my info might be limited but it was worth a shot, thanks Rooster that thread had more than I found on my searches.

And Shepard, Im not that opposed to the bigger motor, but gears are cheap and easy. And if I can swing 30 mph Ill be happy. Running a in 3rd gear is not bad as long as its not like starting off in overdrive.

Still stewing on this even if you have done gears on a higher horsepower motor, what kind of speeds are you getting?

Our CC with the stock 290 has 8:1 gears. The driven clutch was machined by CPP.

It does well on all but the steepest of hills and will go into the mid 30 mph range no problem.

I know my examples are a little off -- I was trying to get a point across that 6 to 1 gearing is the 3rd and highest gearing available. Turning that over with only 11hp may be difficult in certain conditions. Keep us in the loop, HBR is the first person I've read uses high speed gears with a stock engine.

I am really happy with it, but doubt it would be the same with a 6:1, at least with a stock engine...

I put 8:1 in an old maybe 91 CC with the flathead engine. I ran 28mph on gps bumping the rev limit. It was otherwise 100% stock other than me adjusting the governor higher to just hit the rev limit. All I did was put 15psi in the rear tires just to make sure lol. So figure with 6:1 you would be over 30 easy but not far over. Cart had no problem on flat grass or pavement hitting those speeds I am sure it would pull 6:1 on flat surfaces, but that was stock 18 tires. Going from 18 to 22 tires is very close to going stock 13:1 to 8:1 gears, both give about 8-10mph increase. I would guess both together you would double that, I just have the feeling that over 30mph you are going to run out of power and have it on the floor all the time, or it will take off pretty leisurely. The 8:1 CC stock tires would take off ok but power came on at say 20mph instead of 10mph like stock does, so if you hit a hill with it at 10mph I bet it had less power to get up it. Then again the CVt seemed to work fine in it but I have no idea what condition the belt was it and all that. Usually you can make improvements with a spring and new belt and good ramps they work better than stock and help to take off with HS gears....same stuff people do to lifted carts used offroad. Now if you are talking with 22 tires I think the 8:1 would work, 6:1 not sure you are getting to the limit but the cart should go ok on pavement and no hills. Better air up the tires for less rolling resistance.

Well I already have some 22 inch tires now really didn't notice any power loss going to those, however the governor spring was all the way out when I got it, cart went 10mph before I got ahold of it.

Still going back and forth between the 2 sounds like the 8:1 should be doable and get me around 30. However it's only gonna be 2 of us on the cart at all times.....with no hills and 6:1 is no more money and if I swing them would put me close to 40mph.

Also other than tearing it apart any way to tell what size bearing gears I need a couple sites show the 98 model year as a split year and of course mine is a 98

It will likely be ok on flat pavement, just don't expect it to climb or work great at lower speeds on hills or offroad. You can hot up the CVT and it will help you, compared to stock. If you are into road riding and will use them, and you plan a engine swap later anyway, sure I'd try the 6:1. You'll just have to swap sooner if it don't work that good, and then you will say why didn't I swap a big motor in this cart sooner this is awesome.

The one I took apart I put the upper bearings in, the rest were fine. They ran it low on oil. It trashed the upper gears but luckily those are the HS gears you replace so I put them in with new bearings. I took numbers off the old bearings and got them on ebay or at a tractor supply type place I forget. I also rebuilt a tiller and put bearings in that, also had standard size bearings in it. All fails you should be able to get them at an industrial supply bearing place or mcmasters. They will be cheaper on ebay usually are overstocks or NOS, or at a farm place like tractor supply etc....if you can find them there. Some farm equipment uses a lot of standard sizes. You pull the seal out of the inside so the oil can get in is all you need to do for sealed ones, when you put them in a gear case.
