Stock 350 “safe” RPM
EDIT: to say ultimately I’ll be doing an engine swap, figured I would use the stock engine until it dies
Posted this in Gas EZGO forum and Shepard suggested moving over here... I quickly searched while on my lunch break for the answer but didn’t see it, so apologies if I’m beating a dead horse here. I’ve got a 2007 EZGO ST350 2+2. Engine is stock as far as I know, with the exception of me adjusting the governor. I suspect it isn’t working. I also added an Equus tach. Eventually I plan to do an engine swap but I figured I would use the engine until it dies then go that route. I know that running at a higher RPM wears on the engine faster, and no one can say just how fast, but if at WOT it’s hitting 5k RPM, what the best guess on how long it will last? Weeks? Months? Years? It’s hitting 25-27mph according to two different GPS on my phone. Pics and videos included below for reference....appreciate any insight! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2886S-VGJU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXWMzObwL5g |

Re: Stock 350 “safe” RPM
To predict when something, anything, will fail is sheer speculation. So many factors, including Lady Luck and Murphy's Law.
But if you are going to run it to 5,000rpm briefly or sustained I would go ahead and get your complete engine swap shopping list finished....... And maybe add a 1/4" steel plate under the seat to keep what's yours in the condition it is in now. Or there are those new ballistic proof athletic cups some of the MLB catchers are going to. :) |

Re: Stock 350 “safe” RPM
I’m planning to knock the governor back a bit and see what kind of RPM it’s getting to see what happens, as that’s the only thing I’ve adjusted. It’s also not bouncing off a rev limiter and since it’s a 2007, it should have a limiter

Yes -- Kevlar Panties -- Like I said some other place it would be like a grenade going off under your seat. Sorry your not getting the response down here your looking for. Save the tach, you don't need to watch - drive it like you stole it. Will be waiting for your new thread - Peace

Re: Stock 350 “safe” RPM
These are just about lawn engines, most OHV ones will run 4K rpm no problem, many float the valves by 4500. A clone can run over 5K on a stock rod if you don't do it a lot or for very long, just by putting HD valve springs in it. At 6K the rod will not last long at all but stock cams can hardly get there, mine only hit 5200 or something. All that said I ran my G9 with no governor or limiter for over a decade I think and wound it up every time I ran it. It had 22 tires and I never floored it down a hill was my only rule. I think it floated valves at 4500 or so that was 31mph gps is best I ever saw. Today that cart with a 420 lifan and vegas rod and cam and ported head I hit 41gps on the road, but don't normally top it out ever. It does have more power than stock 420 did, it is not comparable to stock G9 engine at all.
People do mod that 350 some, should be posted on here someplace. But if you want real power get ready to toss that thing, bigger engines are where its at and its a lot of fun just be careful because they can go fast enough to get you in trouble then. My stock engine I trail rode on the floor all the time, no way can I do that now. |

Re: Stock 350 “safe” RPM
Just an update for anyone that cares....
Backed the governor adjustment off quite a bit and it’s now running 3700-3800 RPM flat out (if I leave it where it’s at) and ~22 mph It’s likely I’ll adjust it a bit more to hit that 4,000 rpm suggested max https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_Vub2rSpmI |

Re: Stock 350 “safe” RPM
We care and what your doing with the engine being stock [backing the rpm down] is wise. The stock rods don't have a shell bearing to my knowledge and there cast aluminum. There ok for normal use but for a high rpm they need to be billet.
