I've got the itch
95 Club Car DS.
What are my options for big block conversions? Honda vs. Vanguard vs. whatever Vegas Carts sells? Vegas tells me their kit for this car is counter clockwise rotation so my forward and reverse would stay the same correct? |

Forward is forward, Reverse it reverse..
What do you do with your golf cart? Is it lifted? Do you like pedal start or key start? 2,4,6 seater? How fast do you want to go? Just a few questions you need to ask yourself before making a decision. |

Do you have a tachometer now. This is need to know info to calculate the possible speeds. How many rpm does your engine turn when your cruisen 20 mph? What size tires do you run? Have you adjusted the transmission speed governor? RT -- I can explain better by telling my setup. My G2 - stock engine - stock gears - no governor - stock 18 inch tires = 20-22 mph at 40-4200 rpm. The engine ran great but smoked terrible. Upgraded to a VC460 cc big block - new comet 780. everything else remained the same including the speed and rpm. The only difference was I got there in about 3 seconds Second Upgrade -- a little body work and some 25-10-12 tires fit in the whole and I overhauled the transmission. New bearings and 8 to 1 ratio gears. I also replace the secondary clutch when I did the overhaul. Now I can cruise 35 mph at 34-3600 rpm after it shifts out completely. If I stomp on it I've had it up to 44-45 mph at 42-4300 rpm. Its hard to keep track of everything and drive. My front steering is very stable but you never know. Any upgrade you do that gives you more speed comes with a loss of torque in the end. That's why I upgraded. These are the upgrades you'll need to add if you want real road speed. I'm doing improvements so I can get a real VIN. I've built a small enclosed UTV that I want to drive were I want. |

Stock engine and stock trans. Lifted on 22 or 23 inch tires (can’t remeber). No tach and no adjustment to the governor itself. All I’ve done is zip tie the spring.

Re: I've got the itch
Also you say the VC kit is key and the clone is pedal start. Where can I get good info on the clone. If I go in the clone section here they are talking about VC and even google searches lead you to VC.

Re: I've got the itch
The pedal start system uses the starter/generator to start the engine. Vegas's new engine is key start with an internal alternator, so are all the V twins. There are plenty of clones available but maybe somebody else has a better idea. There really isn't a clone engine that can beat the VC460 for price and power output

Re: I've got the itch
"clone" in most cases here refers to honda 390 copies produced in asia. The VC 460 is a refined version built with a fair amount of speed equipment assembled in nevada.

Re: I've got the itch
Thanks guys. I’m not above the key start think I’d just prefer pedal start. It seems more golf-carty whereas an engine running all the time is more atv/utv like. But when it comes down to it, all I really want is more speed while maintaining as much torque as possible with a reliable motor so if key start is the way to go, I’m alright with that.
So let’s say I settle in on the VC big block. Am I good with just that or do I need a rev kit? High speed gears? Etc? What can I expect to see out of that engine stock? |
