Default Throttle Setup

One of the things we all have talked about is get linear motion of the pedal to to throttle. If you only need 1-3/4" of motion to open the carb all the way -- you don't need a gas pedal that moves 4 inches. The first thing I did was figure my linkage and what it took to go WOT. Then I adjusted the gas pedal stop -- the bolt that the pedal falls back on. I adjusted my gas pedal to move 1-3/4" full range of motion. Then I cut up the old cable for the cable adjusters and used them to make a new cable from a bicycle brake cable. Make sure you grease the cable on final assembly.

I hate to disagree with my saved me a couple times friend Shepard.I just went a measured mine. I have a total throw of 7 inches on the gas pedal and use 6 1/2 of them to move the throttle shaft on the carb. I have 1/2" of play off the idle.My point is to me the more graduated the carb opening is the more controllable the acceleration is. Again to me with high HP and higher speed gearing the more paramount this is.

I have to agree with raydhd on this one. I have full pedal motion which I measure just shy of 7". I have nice idle from start and don't hit full throttle or wide open until my foot hits the floor. It's nice and gradual. I used the stock cable and mounted it to the governor lever.

My throttle is also very controllable - smooth. I didn't use any of my original cable - didn't fit my ideas. Mostly to short to use.

When you guys are getting 6-7" of travel, how are you measuring that? By measuring how far the top of the pedal moves from rest to the floor? Or are you measuring how much the cable moves when you go from rest to the floor?

My cable moves less than 2", I can't imagine a set-up where the cable is moving 7".

Top of the pedal to the floor as Shepard was talking about using a throttle stop on the pedal. The stock cable movement at my bellcrank which uses a modified stock governor lever moves only about 1/2 of an inch. See my threat on "clone throttle for pics".BUT the point being I spent a lot of time getting all the ratios right by drilling several holes so that I would end up using the yamahas full pedal travel and not fully open the throttle plate until the pedal was floored. Some of the first bell crank models were not the right ratio and would result in either the throttle plate not fully opening or being deformed by opening too soon.

I measured how much movement was required at the cantilever to open the throttle all the way. After that number was established -- I matched that motion to the gas pedal. On a G2 the gas pedal has a return stop "bolt" that controls the pedal height. I set mine for the motion needed so I didn't pull the ends off the cable. My gas pedal sits like a car pedal. One only thing I forgot to add was I cut about 2.5 - 3 inches off the height of the pedal. It was way to tall and made it hard to control.

Seat of the pants tells me I am using most of the pedal travel to fully open the 625 carb butterfly. More of an issue for me is that (guessing) it takes only 1/4 to 1/3 throttle to hold the rpms at 3500 on the 625. And I tend to cruise at lower rpm than that. If the carb wasn't opening all the way wouldn't bother me if I could get less sensitivity at mid throttle.

I'm amazed no one noticed or commented on how I've miniaturized everything from the gas pedal to the controls on the engine. I know everyone here has hours invested in there setups getting them to work like they wanted. I just wanted to share my work - if I didn't shorten the gas pedal, the measurement at the top would be much more.

No Fair. You didn't tell us in the beginning about lopping the top off your pedal.
