Tach Acting Strange
Yesterday afternoon while driving my TXT with the Vegas 625 my tach starting reading wildly. I was running about 3800-3900 rpm and the tach started reading 6,000 then 7,000, then pegged at 8,000 rpm. The engine didn't change rpm so it must be something in the tach or the wiring. When I got home I didn't have time to check into anything so I will be doing that tonight. I quit paying attention to it and just used the speedo to keep the revs under check on the way home. I didn't look this morning before I left if the needle is still pegged at 8000 or at rest at zero.
The tach is the Vegas Carts tach and has performed flawlessly up until yesterday afternoon. Is there something in particular that would cause this with a wiring issue or should I suspect something on the engine or the tach? |

Re: Tach Acting Strange
I just bought an analog speedometer to replace the digital GPS unit. It uses a "stepper motor" to convert the electronic information into left/right motion. I would think that most analog conversion gauges are the same. My Equus 8086 tachometer pulls a full sweep of the needle and then goes back to zero just before starting.
Hopefully yours goes back to zero. One item I would check, how much vibration is the tachometer absorbing? However you have it mounted -- make sure engine vibration is not shaking the tach, it could disrupt the jewel supports on the needle. |

Re: Tach Acting Strange
Thanks Shepard. Mine did sweep to max and back to zero as it is powered up when I turn on the ignition switch. I didn't check that after the issue started but I will tonight.
Yes, the 625 vibrates quite a bit at some rpm and under load like accelerating up a grade. My tach is mounted on the steering column which transmits a fair amount of that vibration to my hands, and likely the tach. |

Re: Tach Acting Strange
Cannot say about the VC tach BUT if the Equus acts up it is always a ground issue.

Re: Tach Acting Strange
Just got home and gave it a whirl. Tach was sitting on zero when off, sweeps to 8 and back when turned on, and operates as expected with the engine running. Can't imagine how it could heal itself unless there is a loose connection somewhere.
