Default New G2 junker

Hi,

Just picked up a G2 for cheap. It's a junker, but wont be for long :) body is in real good shape, just has 20 years worth of layers of spray paint. Frame has some surface rust but nothing bad or rotten. It came with the OEM motor in a tote. I pulled the plug and spun it with a drill... dry and sitting has 100psi compression. With some oil and run time I'm sure that would.come up quite a bit pretty quickly.

Ultimate plans are to fix it up and sell. I've got too many toys to keep it lol. Unless I really really like it, then maybe I'd sell my G9. But really, I enjoy the "project" mostly and once it works like it should, I lose interest.

My biggest question, How loud are the clone or BB swaps compared to the OEM motor? I already have a G9 I've rebuilt and love. But wouldnt mind a little more power (pulling mostly) though not necessary. I've got 4wheelers I can pull with. I like the idea of a fresh motor in it tho. But I dont want a loud cart, and plan to keep a starter/gen for OEM operation. I'm considering doing a BB swap in the G9 and putting my G9 motor into the project but if BB is a lot louder then that's out. May do a BB in the G2 and just rebuild the motor that came in the tote as a spare for my G9.

Any ideas or recommendations appreciated. I've got a blank canvas, lets paint :)

Thabks, I'm excited to get this one going!

Northern tools has an ironton 18hp engine for like $329. Has anybody had any experience with those?

For a very few $'s more you can buy a put it together yourself VC 460. One way you get all the good parts the other way you get none.

Well, i got this as a project and to steal parts from it for my G9 (plastic seat side support covers, rear seat that i'm going to cut up and turn into a flip seat, etc). I got it cheap enough that the parts alone are worth it for me. I'll make everything work right on it, and make it look good but ultimately no plans to keep it. If i were building an engine for my G9 i'd do the VC build-my-own approach. But this one i'm looking to keep it simple with something already existing i can just drop in, make it look/run right and sell it. I don't mind fabricating any kind of brackets or mounts I need to put it all together, I just don't know what engine is best cost efficient option. I don't want to put a piece of junk in there but don't need/want the top of the line stuff with that top of the line price tag either.

It did come with the factory engine, and it has good complression. but i'm thinking i will tear that down and do a full rebuild on it as a "spare for a rainy day" for my G9 :)

My guess is that you spend more time trying to get the mail order engine running right than assembling the 460. What would it take to assemble the engine ? An hour ?

Is the gas Yamaha forward and reverse controlled by the rear end or will you need something to account for that?

I wouldn't do a mail order engine, i'd just go to Harbor Freight or Northern Tools and pick one up for a few hundred bucks. I can't imagine it would run THAT badly out of the box... Should run good enough to set up the clutches and make the thing driveable. Hardest part would be mounting it in, and the guy before me had a 13hp Predator in it. Blew it up but the mounts are still there. I would just want to hook up the starter/generator in it as well so it operates like a golf cart instead of a go-kart.

Luke, in the G9 the transmission for forward/reverse is in the rear end. So all you need is a motor to make it all spin. :)
