Default vanguard g9 with gears enough power?

I’m doing the 23hp swap on the g9. After my first “ golf cart outing” yesterday I realized a few things.
1. I definitely need more power than the g9 motor to make it up the hills on these trails. I know the vtwin should take care of this
2. I need more speed as well for when we go out on the road. 20mph doesn’t cut it.
3. A lot of the trails make a very sharp turn then shoot up a steep hill that has been rutted by quads and there are also roots sticking up everywhere. So you have to power up the hills in a slow matter.
4. I’ve never had this much fun on something this slow.

I think I have my problem solved but need some experienced advise before wasting my money. If I do the high speed gears (8:1) with the 23hp vanguard will it have enough power to climb hills? According to the calculator it will give me the speed I want for on road but I don’t want to kill the ability to climb hills on the trail. The hills are steep in some spots but mostly just long and rough so you have to go slow.
I know another option would be to make the engine rev higher that 4300 to get the onroad speed but I’d rather not do it that way if I don’t have to

I almost forgot. Most of the time there will always be 2 people on the cart so it’s always going to be hauling around 400-500 pounds of flesh around. And the tire size is 23”.

At 5K I am doing about 36-38mph gps I think, on 22s in G9 stock gears, but tire size varies these measure 23 tall. That is a clone, I've hit 41 gps now pretty much faster than I need to go lol. However it depends on what you do with the engine and cart, stock engine only want to go 3600rpm you can tweak them to 4K, but rev kit is not much for a twin and then you can go 5K easy. But, you don't want to drive around on road at 5K its really only good for bursts of speed. If you want to go fast get HS gears, or if you want to go faster than stock and not rev the engine a lot you must get HS gears. You can go to larger tires but that can complicate the lift on some carts (like a G9 you have to cut off the rear bumper supports and drop the cradle) to fit 25s or better, which will give you a little more speed than 22-23 will. Even with HS gears a 23 twin will have WAY more power than stock on a hill, but I don't know if you are climbing cliffs or what. You can get a cut sheave that will give you a low gear if you need it, so I would say get HS gears if you need to cruise over 30mph. Put it this way I lifted and put 22s on, later put cut sheave and HD kevlar belt and umax spring which all help low end. Finally the stock engine started to smoke so I put a 420 clone in (home depot lifan) and it was like twice the power, could hit 30mph in half the distance no problem, hey the tires will spin in dirt! Now you are talking a 23hp not a 15....so I think you are good with gears. I could pull gears no problem though I now have a ported head and cam and rod in there with a big carb and all that, but the stock clone I also have the bottom end up to 3500 rpm is about the same power. I run this one at 4K rpm shift and it pulls a lot more rpm at high speeds is the major difference. Stock clone is dead at 4300. The G9 has a 11:1 overall CVT gearing so you can plug that into a calculator for speeds with 22 tires, stock engine will do about 4500K rpm no governor on 22-23 tires at 31mph is what I saw. In my stock 420 G9 I can park at bottom of a big grass road ditch maybe 5' deep, and gas it with two guys on and wheelie out the top of it no problem. with one person it likes to spin instead. That is all stock CVT except a cut sheave. So with gears and another 10hp or ft lbs, seems like you would still have more power since 11 to 8 ratio is less than 1/3 change in reducing torque and you'll have more increase in torque than my clone has, more than 1/3 increase.

I have a 23 vanguard with high speed gears in a G2. Lost some torque but not enough to matter. Lots of hill climbing power!!

Good deal. And thanks for the info. I was going to wait till winter to install the vanguard but I don’t think I have the willpower. I was going to make my own engine mount and exhaust but I seen VEGAS carts has a kit so I may just go that route.
I bought the engine separate. Is there anything I need to do to it before installing or can you bolt it in the way it is?

Rev kit is like cheap insurance. Be careful it will have a lot more power and lot faster, but still the same cart. I used to ride mine stock engine on the floor half the time on trails, now I can't step on it much I get going too fast for the corners. It gets up to speed so much faster it takes a while to get used to it, and that is just a built up clone 420.
