Well what’s next?
What should I do next? I have the 23hp vanguard. I put in the cheetah cam that cpp sells. Deleted the governor. And put in the high rev kit from cpp. I’m currently running the header from VC. And working on a muffler. I installed the 8:1 high speed gears too.
I’m happy with the power and it has plenty of top speed BUT I’m one of those guys that to much power still isn’t enough. In reality though I’m just looking for a little more. I know I’m pulling the heads off this winter to do some port work. It killed me seeing how crappy the exhaust ports were when I installed the engine. Does anyone know of a good valve upgrade? Or a bigger valve from something else that fits without having to replace the valve seats? I plan on stopping after the heads are done but I really would like a little more power |

Re: Well what’s next?
PVT sells a head gasket that is .016 thick this will bump up the comp.

Re: Well what’s next?
In any of these small engines really cleaning up the ports and unshrouding the valves ups the air flow a lot.Of course for that to work at its best you need an intake tract that can keep up with the flow and a carb that can deliver the proper mixture. P.S. If I were doing one of those a BIG upgrade would be fitting one of the 36 mm mikunis.

Re: Well what’s next?
Good to know. Any idea how far you can bump compression before detonation becomes an issue with pump gas? Can you bump the compression on these engines while using the timing advance key that comes in the rev kit that I have?
I noticed when I got the vanguard that the ports on the exhaust had a lot of flash in them. I haven’t had the intake off to see the intake ports. Are the valves shrouded that bad on these with stock valves.? Or did you mean unshrouding after installing bigger valves? I haven’t seen one of these heads off the motor yet so I have no idea. I’ll be looking up the Mikuni swap but if I don’t have any luck (I’m computer stupid) can you maybe post a link to this info? |

Re: Well what’s next?
As far as I know there isn't a manifold made for the briggs V twins with anything except twin mikunis as they are not used much in competition. The twin mikuni set up seems to show up on mud motors.

You might also want to check out cromwell racing on face book. He sells the heavy duty racing parts. Nice pic of how he does a vanguard cylinder head with valve unshrouding of the combustion chamber.

I plan on talking to Bruce. I just hate calling him until I’m ready to actually do something. I know he’s busy as heck so I don’t like to call him unless I’m ready to pull the trigger. Just trying to get some ideas right now.

Re: Well what’s next?
Lol. I’m guessing that might be a bit much but I might be wrong. I need to make sure it can still be ridden all day without over heating issues. Not looking for high compression starter issues either. Honestly I don’t even know if those are issues with these engines when you start doing stuff to them
