Doesn't matter if the old motor was removed it looks like the M+ wire was connected to the rev limiter

The tach pictured won't work on the 460, it has not points or electronics to wire to. It might work on a factory engine with an external coil. Vegas Carts has a nice tach that wires to the kill wire or the best bet and bang for your dollar is the Equus 8086. This tach has an inductive pickup that goes on the plug wire.

Totally agree with Shepard You can use the tiny tach BUT there is a BIG lag in its readings. Not a good thing with a high output engine such as the VC 460.

I had a tinytach thing it only updates every second or two its irritating, and that one got funny at 5K sometimes I'd go faster and it read the same other times it went higher. It was ok to set my clutch shift rpm as that stayed even for a bit, ok for idle speed, not much good for other things. But hey it was $15 too. After 4yr it took a dump.

I still have my tiny tach on the cart from the stock engine days. Geez mine is 11 years old and keep it on there for the engine hours. BUT you can see between it and the Equus the HUGE lag when accelerating hard.P.S I do have one on my opie lawn tractor for checking engine hours and how well the governor is working.

Ok, gotta ask - what defines an “Opie “ lawn tractor? I might have a couple!

It is the horizontally opposed B&S twin ii flat head. Sears, Murray and other used them in their 80-90's lawn tractors. I tripped over a NOS short block on EBay for $160 a couple of years ago. Before installing it I looked what the lawn mower racers did with these engines. They used 46 ci heads on the 42 ci block for improved breathing. The 46 was not produced for very long and had a tendency to throw a rod.Anyway I found a couple of sets on Ebay and installed the better of the 2 sets and resold the other set.I still cut my lawn with this 1996 contraption.I have the gov set on 3100 rpms and the thing has tons of torque. With a jetted up carb and those heads not much slows it down. Some carters were running the horizontal shaft version of that engine on here. The heads are are stamped MOD-46 on the fin beside the combustion chamber. I see there is a set on E Bay right now. P.S. Not mine P.P.S I bumped the saga up in BS section.
