Cart buying advice

Long time lurker... First time in the gas cart threads.
Just sold my 36v ezgo in hopes of finding something with more power and gas.

Found a club car that was rebuilt in 2017... Although seller seemed to avoid the question when I asked what the original year was.??? Maybe that doesn't matter though with a full rebuild.
Seller says it has a 30hp Briggs Stratton motor.
I'm mechanically inclined, and I'm willing to learn... But I don't know much about small engines.

Any tips on what I should look for when I go check it out tomorrow. Any red flags or concerns from these photos? Suggestions on what to ask, or look/listen for?

That's a Briggs Vanguard. It appears to be sold by Carts Parts Plus and should either be an 18 or 23 horsepower. They're a reputable sponsor here and sell complete big block conversion kits for golf carts.

Thanks. Any advice on what I should look for when buying this cart? The seller said it's a 30hp... So they may not know a ton about the cart (or it's past)

I've never ridden on a modified cart, will this cart be loud... Or can I still carry a conversation while driving?

I suppose if it is a 23 hp and it has some work done to it (cam, rev kit, exhaust ) it'll be pushing a few more ponies than what it's rated for. It'll have a ton of torque/power even in stock form. Loud? It might be depending on what muffler is being used.

Looks like a 23 hp with the oil cooler, unless someone added it to an 18 hp. And with what looks like a factory governor delete, 99.9% sure it's from CPP.

I was waiting for you to chime in Ron. The air filter housing is clearly from CPP. Looks like a nice set up.

It's a 1997+ Club Car for sure and with that your forward/reverse is all backwards.

Forward will become Reverse and Reverse will become forward on 1997+ Club Cars due to a change in engine rotation. 97+ Club Cars originally came with Clockwise rotation engines but you will be replacing with a Counter Clockwise engine. This has no I’ll effect on the longevity of your cart. It will however lower your forward gear ratio from approximately 12:1 to 18:1 . The cart will have massive torque but top speed will be limited due to engine rev limit. If you need additional top speed or to lower cruising rpm, replace the rear axle gears with 6:1 or 8:1 gear sets.

I recently rode in a member's cart with the CPP Vanguard. He lined the bottom of the bed with deadening insulation, it was much quieter than I had expected. Still a little louder than a regular cart but not a lot. I think with a different muffler it could be quieted down even more.

Never know what you've got until you know what you're working with.

I did buy this cart today. You're absolutely right. The forward and reverse are backwards and there is massive torque when starting from a stop. I have no need for any additional speed... So I'm not concerned about that.
And yes, as others noted it is indeed actually the 23hp engine.

It's basically impossible to start from a start without popping a wheelie... Which isn't ideal when hauling small people in the rear facing seat... Any options for reducing that initial torque (even if it comes at a loss of speed?)

Also, as I have questions... Is this the proper forum, or should I post in a different one?

Yep. You nailed it. It's a 23hp.
The air filter cover says carts parts plus, so you nailed that too!

I own it now. It's got a ton of torque when starting from a stop, any options to make acceleration more gradual?
