Vegas 625 Kit for EZGO TXT

Hello everyone. With the help of this forum I got up the nerve to pull the engine from my 2001 EZGO TXT. I posted a video here:

Anyway, I am likely going to buy the complete Vegas 625 kit with wiring harness. I have a couple of quick questions I hope you can help me with to prepare for the project.

1) Are there any coupon codes or any discounts for members of this forum? With shipping and the harness I'm almost at $1900 :(

2) Is taking off the rear body a must to get this motor in?

3) To prepare I believe I need to completely remove the old cradle (if that's what it's called). Is that correct? Please see the picture I've attached. I've highlighted the areas I'm referring to.

4) As far as wiring will I be reusing anything other than my wiring for my headlights / taillights?

Lastly any other tips / tricks / advice is more than welcome. I am a total novice so any help is greatly appreciated.

VC runs specials from time to time, you need to keep an eye out on the website. While taking the rear body off may not be required, it will make the task of putting that huge engine in MUCH easier. According to the installation instructions for your cart, on the VC website, all original hardware and brackets from the axle are removed. The piece on the right of your pictures is also removed. I didn't re-use any of the original engine wiring for my DS kit. If headlights and taillights were grafted into the OEM wiring, I would suggest redoing it. Here is a link to the installation guide for your cart, read through this. It may help answer additional questions you may have on the install.

Thank you for your reply. I thought those brackets had to come off per the instruction manual, but just figured I'd double check before taking them out.

I'll have to figure out how my headlights / taillights are wired. I'm just a little confused about the electrical - the Vegas setup seems so simple compared to the stock setup. I hope I'm not being overly optimistic :)

Thanks for the comment about removing the body. Was hoping to avoid that step, but if it will make the engine install much easier I guess I'll have to bite the bullet.

The wiring is simpler on the VC kit for sure, and for a couple of reasons. #1 removing pedal start and going to key start, that removes a lot of micro switches and related wiring in itself. #2 removing the starter/generator because the VC unit is all self contained. Again, this removes a lot of wires and connections from the overall build. I removed every electrical component in my black box, fuses, solenoids and microswitches and the only reason its still there is for the throttle actuation, period. I do wish I would have kept the microswitches for the back up buzzer, I'm gonna have to remember which way I am going before getting on it now.

Ha I laughed about the buzzer - that was one of the first things I disconnected when I got my cart. Thanks again for your input. What you say makes perfect sense since the pedal start and external starter / generator will be gone.

I called Vegas today and ordered the kit and the wire harness - worth the $50 for me I think. Unfortunately some of the parts are on backorder so I won't be getting it for 5-6 weeks :(

Oh well, that will give me plenty of time to take the body off...

Total with tax was $1,758. I saw on some coupon sites there was 5% off, but the codes didn't work. However, when I mentioned it on the phone they gave me the 5% so that paid for the shipping. Worth asking about if anyone is thinking of ordering from them.

Body rivet kit is a whopping $15 for that cart. Pull that sucker and clean house before the new stuff comes..

Good choice on the VC kit. They make good stuff, I have purchased many of their parts, always good quality.

Vegas Carts will be your best resource for install advice. I recommend calling them and talking with Aaron. Geoff is also good to chat with, but he is usually super busy, go figure lol. They have done hundreds of these installs and they know them by heart. The have likely seen it all.

$1700 is not bad considering all the time and money you will save in fabrication of your own parts. Also, you have to figure that the engine is the heart of the cart and worth at least 50% of it's value, and that engine is an upgrade from a stock engine. Most stock engines will cost you similar dollars.

My rule of thumb, do it right the first time, and that usually costs more money up front. You'll be glad you spent the money.

Yes I was really trying to make the best long term choice. I could see me getting the stock motor rebuilt and then having other old parts fail...

I spoke with Ivan yesterday and he was pretty helpful. I'm hoping if I follow the instructions I'll be ok. I'm sure it will take me longer than it would take many others on this forum, but if it works I'll be happy :)

I will be sure to post pictures (and hopefully video) when I'm finished.

Quick question - do most people wait until the install is finished to fire up the motor or do you test it beforehand? From what I can tell seems like most folks fire it up for the first time after it's in the cart. I might want to test it though before I go and mount it up, but maybe no one has ever gotten a bad motor?

You can do it prior to installation, just don't install the clutch. If you start the engine with the clutch installed and no belt, the clutch halves will slam shut and you will have to disassemble the clutch in order to get it to release. There is a warning in the instructions regarding this. Also, drain any residual oil and refill with your own. I do not believe these ship with oil, but there is some remaining in the case from being test fired at VC.

All good advice. I was lucky with doing a run in with the clutch on after NOT reading the warnings. I was able to get it back to the idle position with disassembly or getting my fingers hurt. The other point is some ended up with overfilled crankcases because of residual oil.
