Install vertical bigblock using mower transaxle
I've been looking for a cart project and found 3 so far, gas yamaha g1, g9 and electric cushman golfster 4wheel. All for between 70-$200.
All have everything there just need some tlc and could probably be made to work under stock power. I have a 10hp vertical shaft engine which I was originally going to use. I also have acess to a couple 18hp and higher vtwin vertical shaft engines and mower transaxles. How hard would it be to replace the stock rearend with the mower rearend. I could mount the engine right above or just in front or behind the axle and connect it via belt or chain and rig up a clutch. This would gain me the ability to run vertical engines, high HP verticals are much cheaper and readily available. I would also end up with 5/6 forward speeds plus reverse. I could gear it so top gear would be around 45mph or so and drive it like a manual car. Has anyone done anything like this and which of those 3 carts do you think would be the best base for a project cart. |

Re: Install vertical bigblock using mower transaxle
My initial thought is that the lawnmower rear end wont hold up to that kind of speed simply because it isnt made to go that fast, but I dont know, some one else should correct me if Im wrong

Re: Install vertical bigblock using mower transaxle
IT MIGHT be hard to fit a body over it, But the idea is do-able. I don't know how practicle it is. Ive had some mid to large mowers that run as fast as a stock carts and faster. It could be done. Hope more ideas surface. I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work. Since your mower will supply the drive transaxle you could use the electric, or the cheapest available...Good Luck! tONYtON

Re: Install vertical bigblock using mower transaxle
The guys who race mowers use the stock transaxles so I think it could hold up to the speeds. About being practical, seems like a great plan.
If everything works I will gain 1. use of vertical engine, which are easy and cheap to find as everyone has them in mowers but that's usually the only thing they're good for. 2. I will have 5or6 speeds forward, neutral and reverse.(most important, in my project I really wanted to be able to shift) 3. All driveline parts will be plentiful and cheap since they come from mowers. Only thing I'm not sure of is the clutch. On a mower when you push the brake/clutch it simple loosens the drive belt, While I might be able to rig up a similar system it might be difficult because it will be a much shorter belt. I'd really like to use a chain to connect the engine to transaxle. Not sure where I can get a manual clutch that hooks to a mower engine on one side and has a sprocket on the other. Also are any of the carts stronger or beefier than others? I read that the cushman is built solid but how are they to get parts for? It seems that the G9 is a popular cart here, plus I've always been a huge Yamaha fan when it came to powersports. |

Re: Install vertical bigblock using mower transaxle
alright well now it's between the Golfster and the G1. Both appear to be mostly complete. Both could be made to work with some tinkering and are both about $100.
Any real differences, that would have an impact on my project? |

Go with a zero turn mower. That would be cool.

Re: Install vertical bigblock using mower transaxle
someone else can try a skid steer mower transmission.
Does anyone know how wide a golf cart axle is(including wheels, outside sidewall to outside sidewall) as well as how wide a mower usually is, I think they're axles might be narrower but they usually have wider tires so it might just come out right? |
