2004 EZGO TXT limo Honda GX630 does not go past 10mph
Hello to all, I need some assistance, I have a 2004 EZGo TXT 6 seater with a Jakes big block conversion kit installed. Recently the cart has been slowing down and it started to smoke the belt going uphill. I decided to replace both clutches (Drive is a Comet, Driven is Stock) and belt. Cart does not go past 10mph, it feels like the governor kicks in at 10mph. I cannot find any adjustment for the governor on this Honda GX630 engine. Does anybody have any secrets for this engine??

The electronic governor keeps it at around 3600-3800 rpm, which is where your peak power is. If the engine is running at it's best, even at the rev limit you should have maximum power. You should be able to get 20-25 mph with big tires.
If it's smoking the drive belt, you have no problems with engine power. Something's not right in the drivetrain if it won't go faster than 10 mph. You might have a problem in the transaxle. Have you ever drained the oil in the transaxle? Might be worth an hour and a few bucks to check for metal. If you drain it, use some cheese cloth or an old white t shirt to catch the oil so you can look for the metal. Usually once a belt has been smoked, it's done. Replace it if you haven't. New clutches and old belt are no good. Get the best belt you can, I use the Kevlar reinforced HD belts from Dayco. They are cogged on the outside. I spent about $60 bucks on it, double the price of a standard belt but way worth it. Also, check to see if your brakes are hanging up. Put up on jack stands and put in neutral, tires should spin easily. |

Looks like s Slo and I are both Dayco belt users. They have 2 grades of ATV/Snowmobile belts. The earlier and cheaper HPX line and the later and beefier XTX line. I actually have belts from both lines and maybe it is overkill on my cart I using the XTX version. You can see side by side how much beefier the XTX is than HPX. It is probably a moot point in our carts versus the High HP snowmobiles the XTX belt is designed for BUT by running the fatter belt I did gain more speed at the same rpm.

Re: 2004 EZGO TXT limo Honda GX630 does not go past 10mph
Best belt I had was the gboost cogged hd kevlar. But then I had to go to a longer belt this one is maybe a dayco and cogged but its not as good I don't think. Its not bad, just not as flexible. Its for a polaris scrambler atv.
You smoke a belt it is likely the clutch is the problem, or the belt was very worn, or you overloaded the cart for how it is setup. Remember if the engine has a governor or rev limit, when you hit that its done. So if your clutch is not shifting BEFORE that rpm your cart slows down. The clutch must shift under that limited rpm. So you should never see 3400 (where many start to cut in) until the clutch is fully shifted and belt at top of primary, only then will rpm go higher in a proper setup like this. It can be a problem because carts dont use limit on engine or its 4K rpm, and the trans governs speed to the ground. The engine runs whatever the clutch has it run. So if you drop to a 3600 governor you lost 400 rpm the stock cart may have used. So you may have to take the primary and drop the shift rpm on it somehow by making weights heavier usually or weaker spring. I'd say get a $15 tach they are slow but enough to show you what is going on. |
