Default So it turns out I have a big block (vanguard18) in my cart lol

So I am obviously new to golf carts and just made the revelation today lol.

We bought a used Beast48 cart back in 2011 for my office that was already setup how we needed it. We used it for skeet shoots and it already had the gun racks...was not a cammo hunting version. I knew it had a "upgraded" motor and that it was a vanguard 18. I came upon this site recently when looking for more info on the cart because id like to get more into it and mod it up for more performance. I had seen the big block section but hadn't looked until today...and low and behold I see the vanguard 18 lol.

I dont know if there are anyone on here that work on them in the Lafayette LA area? If so who?

Right now I get 17 mph as it sits and that seems pretty low to what it can do...not sure if it should do more in stock form now?

Being new to the golf cart world I have some questions...sorry if some are real basic.

What should be some first things first with it performance wise?

I do not know what all is on there as far as brands and whatnot but I can look and take pics to get more help. I called beast48 and they were generally putting stock motors in them but thats about all I know as of now.

TIA

My first question would be, do you know what rpm you are running at 17mph? If you don't have a tach, make a call to Vegas Carts in our sponsors page, they have a good one for your cart/engine combo.

If your engine will only rev to 3600 rpm or so, it means the governor is still intact and is working properly. To run higher rpm you need to either disable or bypass the governor.

Be advised, 5000 rpm is as fast as I would run without a proper rev kit. High rpm driving will cause the pushrods to bend. Rev kits come with better pushrods and either better springs or spring shims to prevent valve float.

I have done some reading and called cartparts as well to get a better idea of whats going on. I do not have a tach so that might be something I get first and see what shes spinning too. The governor and rev limiter are different im assuming? Remove or bypass the gov and adjust the rev limiter up?

Ill also get a rev kit once I find someone near me that will install it. The first golf cart place in the area I called doesn't do that kind of work.

I am not looking to go super fast in it because im sure it gets hairy going that fast in that thing but what would one expect if there was a rev kit and the RPMs were set to max at 4500-5000?

The governor is a rev limiter. Same thing really on this engine.

If you have 22" tires, at 4500 your speed will be in the 28 mph range I'd guess.

Gotcha! I am ordering the Tac now to start while I look for someone to install a rev kit. Ill need to figure out how to find and hook that up to the proper ignition coils as well as the other wires. I haven't really looked much under there yet. Any tips?

You don't say what type of cart it is. There are hi speed gear sets -- 8 to 1 ratio for Yamaha's. I have 25 inch street tires and 8 to 1 gears, and run 32-35 mph at 3600 rpm. I can run it up to 45 mph and 44-4500 rpm if I want. There are our gear sets that are even faster, 6 to 1 ratio. I think there for Ezgo carts.

It’s built on a EZGO but I don’t know what year exactly. I saw the gears too and like the idea of turning the motor at lower RPMs when cruising so it’s not as loud. What do they do for the low end from a stop?

Some more pics. I’m thinking that “muffler“ needs to get from under the seat. Some headers into some sort of car muffler with a tip/tips? I’d like a deeper not as loud tone.

I agree muffler under seat is not good lol plus it looks restrictive too
All in all it’s a very cool cart tho

Vegas Carts and Cart Parts Plus (both sponsors) have good exhaust header/pipe setups. Muffler? It depends on the room you have, but car mufflers tend to be a little big. I use a tractor muffler on mine, like the sound, not too loud.
