Default 1991 Club Car Gas

Good morning gents, I have the above mentioned cart. It’s in very good condition so I don’t see the need to buy a new one. It currently runs fine but smokes a little at start or choked. I want to start collecting the needed parts for an engine swap. I don’t need it to fly as my kids drive it a good bit but around 25mph loaded would be cool. What engine/kit would you recommend?

Depends on your budget and mechanical ability. If you are into fabrication you can save some money by building your own parts for the swap. Engine choices are endless really, but most people either go:
1.) Honda GX390 clone/Vegas Carts 460 engine
2.) Briggs Vanguard 16hp or 23hp
3.) Harbor Freight Vtwin
4.) Vegas Carts 625 single cyl

If you want an bolt in kit, look at the Vegas Carts 625. It will fit with or without a lift kit and will get you 25 mph or better. I've not used the new 625, but I have used many of their parts and the 440 and 460 engines. They make good stuff. Power will be much better than stock.

If you want a Vtwin engine you'll likely need a lift kit to fit the engine in. For budget go with HF Vtwin engine. If you want a bolt in Vtwin kit go with Cart Parts Plus 23hp Briggs Vanguard kits, they are super nice. Torque will be killer.

Thanks for all of the info. I’m just getting into carts and although ours runs fine I’m going to start saving/collecting some parts. I’m a mechanic by trade so I feel I could do the swap but when I started researching I had no clue what engine to pick. Just want it to be reliable because we take it on trips. Will look into the options you gave me. By the way the VC kits look nice and simple.

Also how do you like the VC 460’s? Is that a drop in for a club car or will it take some modification?

The 460cc Vegas Karts engine is the best bang for your dollar. If your mechanically inclined it would be a few hours work to assemble the kit and a good teaching tool for your kids. Vegas Karts has all you'll need to set it up.

Where are you Stevop? I might want to buy your old motor when you do this.

Hey I’m located in SE Georgia about 60 miles north of Savannah. I’m only kicking around the idea right now but if I move forward I’d be more than happy to work out a deal with you.

Your engine choice depends on what you want out of it and what your budget is. There is no "one engine for all" option. They all have their positives and negatives.

Understood. This is a family golf cart so I don’t need a ton of speed but enough power for 4 people and or some cargo. Looking at the VC460 as an option when my KF82 is done. Would that engine fill that role?
