Default Vanguard 23 build questions

I’m wanting to build my Mud Buddy surface drive boat motor with a Vanguard 23. I’ve been doing some research, and there’s still a lot of questions I have that I can’t seem to find an answer to. How much RELIABLE horsepower is possible out of these motors? I’m not really limited to a strict budget, I’m willing to spend some money to get the most power I can and keep it reliable. Is there an advantage from the 2 barrel carbs vs a big single carb? I seen somewhere on here someone is using a carb from a Yamaha grizzly 660. I was thinking I’d send the stock heads to Precision Cams and have them ported/milled for compression and flow tested and a cam to match these heads. Upgrade valves/springs. Custom stainless exhaust (2-1 or duals?), don’t plan to rev much past 5000 rpms cause I don’t think the prop in my application will perform well past that. Install ARC billet flywheel just to be safe if needed. I know I’m probably not touching all the bases here, but I’m looking for advice. If you weren’t on a budget and wanted to get the most power out of this engine while running on 93 octane gas, reliably; how would you accomplish this? And what is a safe compression ratio for 93 octane?

Vegascarts makes some double tube headers for these engines. Also Cromwell racing sells some worked carbs and manifolds and heavily worked cylinder heads.

I'd contact Backwater Performance. They specialize in mud boat engines and can guide you to what works best for your particular engine. Also, there are a bunch of forums dedicated to mud boats, you might check those guys out too. I'm sure that "golf cart engines" and "mud boat engines" are very different animals as far as how each need to perform.

I'm using a Grizzly 660 carb and it's a monster! Huge difference just changing to that carb vs the stock carb. With no other mods, this engine is definitely making more power! It revs as far as you want to take it, however my engine does not have a rev kit or cam in it yet. With the cam and rev kit I see this combo being killer!
