Clutch for Kohler 23 HP????
I just inheritied (No one died) a 23 hp Kohler that needs a top end. I don't want to WASTE a penny on it without knowing about a clutch that will fit. This is what I got. 1" tapered to 1 1/8 within a 1' span with a key way. It's a little countersunk at the block (see pics)Leaving only 3/4 for a clutch.
Does anyone Know what will fit?? Thanks in advance. I'm 80% done with a 350 mod and Dad says, "you should rebuild the Kohler and use it" Should have told me that $800.00 dollars ago! Good old Dad |

Re: Clutch for Kohler 23 HP????
Hate to tell ya Tony, but you might be buying a crankshaft for that one to be able to install a clutch.. That engine must have come off of a Kohler standby/RV generator, or was used on some type of pump application to have that oddball crankshaft..

Re: Clutch for Kohler 23 HP????
That actually came out of a Toro Workman (dumptruck thing). One side powers the Hydraulic pump the other side was for the PTO or something/ Flywheel. I didnt pay much attention when it was installed, I did check the rotation. CC at the shaft.
It was generator family engine. They changed newer models. That's too bad. At least it was priced right. $0.00 It had a manual clutch w/ 3 speed trans. and sat normally (like a truck) Probably had a clutch plate on the shaft. It was worth a try. Let me know if anyone comes up with something. Thanks, Tony |

Re: Clutch for Kohler 23 HP????
Has any one ever?? That shaft had a flywheel /clutch/ bellhousing/trans./etc... I talked to Pops.
Are there any clutches that could be secured through the back side? Thick rear sheave? Could a flywheel be used to hold the clutch from the backside? Center the clutch, drill / tap countersunk machine screws through / from the back, to secure the clutch. It would make the clutch/ flywheel one piece. Then use a key and long bolt to secure the new unit to the shaft..... WHAT DO YOU THINK ?? |

Re: Clutch for Kohler 23 HP????
That's the kind of thing I wanted to hear. I'll call/search to see if I can't come up with a price for a standard keyed crank/ camshaft. I knew there had to be a way. The motor ran, but is worn. tHANKS for the reply. tony
