Default Vertical versus horizontal

This has probably been asked a hundred times before, but I have two B&S vertical engine from lawn mowers. Is there a way, or what is the best to use them in a cart? I have a Club Car XRT1200 and a Kawasaki Mule 550 (also have a Kubota RTV900 as well as rebuilding two old electrics, just for info).
Any help will be appreciated..........thanks

You've got a XRT, a Mule, and a Kubota that all need engines
Wanna sell the Kubota?

Smile Re: Vertical versus horizontal

No, although I might feel like it with it's left hind leg up in a sling (my wife hit a very big and very sharp metal or glass shard while prowling the boondocks). Whatever, the hole was way too big for the slime or a plug to deal with. A new tire and rim from Kubota is $450.00 plus, although they did find a very good used one for $250.00 that I will pick up Monday. The 900 only has 50 hours on it. My wife's Mule has the factory 290cc engine and it runs good, but only has about 9Hp. We have put a all metal full cab and doors on it and it feels the load a bit. She also wanted twin 4" chrome exhaust stacks up each side of the cab. I ran the exhaust up one and the other serves as another source of way up there air for the carb. I am now bidding her last request, that being rear dual tires. In any case, it would still scat with 18-20 Hp. The XRT has around 13 horses, but with two seats and a dumping bed, it could use a few more as well.

Thanks for the reply though............

Thanks, but there has to be a way. I was looking for someone with some good ideas (I don't mean that as a slam). I know with a shaft, you can run a 90 degree gear and that would work well. Now that I just said that just said, why can't I put the 90 degree gear right under the vertical engine and then over to the clutch? If you got the right gear, it would only lower the front part of the clutch by an inch or two.........??????????

Thanks again

Post lots of pics of the build... There are about 3000 Golf Cart nuts here who would be interested to learn how to do this. Thank you

Sure it can be done but if you paid for the parts and the labor it would be a couple time more than the cost of the horizontal shaft engine. you'd need to have the parts laying around, do all the work yourself and consider your time worthless. even then you adding more weight, making it less dependable (more to go wrong) It will eat horse power running through a gear box, and in a normal cart i'm not sure there's enough room but I don't think that would be a problem for your carts. just a whole lot of reasons why it really doesn't make sense to do it.

Well, I'm retired and disabled. I took this up to be something that would keep me off the sofa and watching soap operas. I didn't see the bottom of our retirement property until I bought my first EZGO. So, I consider time spent doing this of very high value. I have shafts lying all over the place and I can pick up the 90 degree gear for well under a hundred bucks. The units I have looked at are only several inches long (I think I may have said "gear box" and that paints the wrong picture). It remains to be seen, but I doubt that it will suck up more horepower than I gain. But, this is just an idea at this point........I am still looking at other options and remain open to other ideas....being in an area with lots of military surplus is an advantage

Thanks for your reply...............

Anyway...keep in mind the 90 gear box ratio needs to be 1:1 ratio. Your going to have to mount a clutch to that shaft, the RPM's need to be the same as the engine RPM or your gearing will be all wrong. Possibly to the point of being worse than it is now with the stock motor.....so not just any old 90 degree box will do. Be sure and post lots of pics cause I think you'll be the first to do it.

Good luck!
