pull start keeps popping back

well, whenever i go to start my honda gx340, it keeps wanting to pop back and it snaps the rope, not to mention hurting the **** out of my hand. i took the belt off and tried to start it same deal. i got a brand new pull start assembly and it broke the rope first pull. im almost sure its something in the engine. it takes about 3 pulls and then when you pull it goes out about half way and POP!!!, the rope snaps back and breaks the rope. i think its a timing issue but im not sure. me and my arm would really appreaciate some help...

I had a briggs racing cart motor that would do the exact same thing. I had to bump it around until it got to the compression stroke before yanking the cord. Timing "could" be set for too much advance but I doubt it. I don't think there is a way to set the timing on those but I could be wrong.

yeah i can get it on the compression stoke and pull and it still does it. i would just get a electric start but it might break the starter. tommorow im going to honda house but i really want to drive it today. hopefully ill figure this thing out.

i just did some research and i think you can turn the ignition coil to adjust the timing but im not sure how to adjust it. theres a small engine repair place not to far from here, ill just take the cart down there tommorow if i dont have any luck...

just alittle update, there was a pin in the flywheel way down in the engine, and the guy at the shop said he didnt know how it got bent, but it was the culprit.

yeah it hurts like **** when it pops back, you if its strong enough to break a brand new pull rope like a peice of yarn, it will hurt
