that sounds like a carb adjustment to me unless the timing is off...

Re: 20 hp briggs running extreamly lean
even if it isn't getting enough gas the plugs shouldn't be white..

Re: 20 hp briggs running extreamly lean
Hi rusty, That fuel filter won't fill up until the pump starts pumping into it. Even after it runs the filter will only be half full. They usually have air in them, unless it's a gravity fed system.
Sounds like dirt in the carb but, since the fuel delivery system is questionable start there. Test your fuel pump. Remove the line to the carb and turn over the motor. It should spurt out gas in pulses. If it doesn't check the vacuum line from the motor to the fuel pump. That is a remote fuel pump? correct?? Once you determine the fuel pump is working, clean the carburator. Remove, disassemble, clean and re-assemble. If it's still lean, it's probably an air leak. Carb gasket or crankseal... Let us know what happens... |

Not enough gas is lean, those plugs are white do not use the engine until you fix the problem, it may be a plugged inlet in the carb or a plugged main jet, air leak at the carb mount. Good luck keep us posted.

Re: 20 hp briggs running extreamly lean
did you spray around the throttle shaft to see if it was worn? I would pull the carb and clean it. Not much to this carb. Remember that you have to pull the cover off to unhook the fuel stop valve

Re: 20 hp briggs running extreamly lean
ok guys went back and took the carb off and apart there was some rust in the bowl really fine took it complerly apart and soaked it in gas then blowed the hell out of it out with air then started putting back together put a peice on and blow it out again with air . got it put all back together and put it back on started it up and the same thing loping then it shut off i said a few choice words then started it back up it spit and sutttered. i thought fine i will just order a new one then it started running fine. let it run a few min running fine guess i moved a piece of rust were it finally worked its way out. i will run it a little tomorrow then check the plugs sure dont want to burn a valve or a piston. thanks for all the help
