Default Should I go Big Block??? Serious newbie question!

Hi folks, I am new to the Golf Cart world and I need a little help. I purchased a 2003 EZ GO gas powered cart. The problem is the cart has no power and that leads me to believe that the engine is in need of a rebuild. The previous owner had replaced the carb, clutch, belt, and gave it a tune up but with no success. It is still very down on power. So here is my situation, I live in an area with some steep inclines and need something with torque to climb the hills. I also need to take into account that I have a 5 year old son that loves to drive the cart. Should I spend the money on a kit for the rebuild of the stock 295CC engine or purchase a big block kit from one of the sponsored providers. I have browsed the posts on this site and I am still unsure what is the best course of action. Also is there a less expensive way to accomplish the big block install than with a complete kit? If I do a big block conversion where would be the best source for all parts and technical information needed to achieve a correct install? Thanks Capt. Rob

Very solid questions. I will tell you from experiance, once you drive a BigBlock cart, you will have a smile from ear to ear. I have done builds with and without kits and for the ease of install and extra headachs and expenses..buy a kit. They are a true bolt in job. As for where to buy? Tom at CPP not only sells great kits, he is a superior after the sale helper. He sells Briggs/Vangaurd's. MikesMotorToy's sells Honda's ( as I understand) but don't know if he sells kits or he only installs them. You may want to talk to both these knoweledgable guy's. I have no problem with Honda's, I've used them and (they "rock" right out of the box), but Vangaurds do have more aftermarket parts available at this time. Watch out for Tom....He will not pressure into engine upgrades, but he is a great salesman.....I know this from experiance also. Good luck on your choice and remember, We all love build pic's. Later Dave

Okay a couple more ?'s. If I do a kit would the suggestion be 18 or 23hp? Also if I leave the governor in place will the cart still have good power? Does anyone know the top speed with the governor in place? Like posted before I want to be sure it will stay safe for my son.

You would be happy with either. The difference isn't alot but might be what you want to spend on some other mod. There is a way to governor it so it can only go so fast... I'm sure Dave could tell you. I know it can be done on mine but I've just always gone pedal to the metal.

Azboo, My luck my son would go pedal to the metal and end up in the Colorado River. I notice you have a 16hp. How do you like the performance of the 16hp?

The larger the diameter of tire you use the faster the cart will go. I have an 18 kit from Tom with no governor and love it. Feels funny now to drive a stock cart!!
CPP's kit comes with everything you need and instructions for using and setting up the governor. You will have very good power at low speeds.

I don't think you could govern either engine to a safe level for a five year old. Normally I'd be first in line to recommend the conversion, but I keep a watchful eye on my fifteen year old on my 20 hp cart, they are fast.....There are things you can do with the machining and tweaking the driven clutch to get the climbing torque you require if you decide to keep the stock engine. Why don't you start with a compression check on the engine?
