Question No top end speed

I have installed a Briggs 18hp opposed engine in a 2000 workhorse. New 780 comet clutch, new belt(maybe to wide), bypassed governor on rearend. I attached throttle cable straight to engine, but I am using the governor on the engine. When in neutral and i rev up the engine both cluthes are opening and closing properly. When in gear the cart is very sluggish and when viewing the clutches they are not opening and closing as they do when in neutral. Any suggestions on adjustment. I am not looking for a dragster here, but do need 20-30 mph if possible. Like I mentioned I had to use a 50.5 inch belt and the only one I could find is about 1/8 to 3/16 wider than what the clutches call for. I have bypassed all other original wiring and have the engine wired to a new key switch. Gas pedal when pushed gives the engine plenty of throttle(in neutral works just fine). Hope this is enough detail to get a good response here. My son is ready to ride, but 5 mph isn't getting him too excited. Thanks in advance for any help!

it looks like the governor spring may be stretched, shorten the spring or move it to a different hole.

that is actually a spring that I added to help pull the throttle control back upon releasing the foot pedal. It seemed like it did not want to return to where is was supposed to be. Like I mentioned in the thread, when in neutral i can push the accelerator and both clutches will open up fine. ANy other suggestions.

Are you sure your compression is high enough to pull the cart? The drive clutch is not slipping? What size tires are you running?

I am running oversize tires, with a 5 inch lift kit! The engine only had about five hours on it and best I can tell has tons of compression. Any other suggestions? Again could the oversize wide belt have something to do with it. Also, clutches both opening and closing great when in neutral.

I need a better pic but it looks like the belt is to big and maybe to
long if the belt cant get to the bottom of rear clutch and the top of
the front clutch you wont get to top speed.

Cool Re: No top end speed

Thanks for the information. I actually shaved some of the width off the belt and it got better. I think it will continue to wear down and work even better. I might even shave a little more off. What would you think should be expected for top speed on this setup. Also when in gear it tries to go without push the gas. Again I think this is due to the wide belt and maybe a tad to tight????

Also curious what the small rectangular piece is on the front of the transmission in front of the forward and reverse cables. Could this have any thing to do with the speed?
