Default 440 yamaha With no spark?

Well this is my first post, plz bare with me. I just bought a 94' ezgo with a 76' Yamaha 440 snowmobile engine conversion in it, last week. The cart was not finished with the motor install, so i finished it Friday. When i picked it up the motor was frozen it had no exhaust and a carb in pieces, and i had no idea what is was doing. (I normally work on civics but i wanted a new toy)

Now the real reason for this post, my friends and their dad helped me with all this work including the rewiring which was a bad idea. (hind sight 20/20) So we hooked the electric start up and it was working, after trying 6 starter solenoids, we finally got it. Then we pulled the messy wiring loom that was in it and started from scratch. We put constant 12vdc to the coils, in conjunction with a ignition on/off switch and the switch for the light bar in front, and felt secure bout it. So we tried starting it. NO GO. But it made some horrible noises from the coils. Then we turned around and herd a hissing noise and a big cloud of white sulfuric acid burning up.(or something like that) So my question is did we burn up the coils; and or what is some thing else? Oh and we still have power pules coming from the mag/stator/generator wire set that was originally connected to the coils.

Thank you for any and all help u can give me i hope to have this thing running again so i can actually test it at the dunes this thanksgiving.
