Older Briggs 16 Twin
I have a little older Briggs 16, it runs great, but its not a V twin. Its the older, what would you call it, flat twin? Would this work like a V twin in a 01 Workhorse?I read about the rev kits for the V twin, is this nessary? I'm not really wanting to hot rod it, just kinda keep it on the utility level but with a little more HP.Plus, its a totally free engine. Can I use it or is it more trouble than its worth?I do want a nice Golf Cart speed, at least equil to the stock 350.Thanks for the help!

Re: Older Briggs 16 Twin
YOu can literally put whatever you want in your cart..if you have enough
resources and know how..and desire. If the engine you're talking about isn't capable of high enough revs, it might not really be a good choice..then again, like I said..I am learning that the last thing you want to do around here is tell someone it can't be done.. The ease of installation, modification, and end result is the equation.. It may be too tall, unless you are planning on a lift.. I like those old motors, but I had to turn my nose up at a couple because they didn't look like the right specs for what I was going to need.. I have an old 16 hp Kohler that will probably still running when we are all dead, but it just would be a noisy beast in a golf cart, in my opinion.. Nice to see another Georgia person here.. |

Re: Older Briggs 16 Twin
Yea, the revs is what I wondered about. But, for free, I may give it a shot.Worst case is I'll have to take it out and swap a Vtwin, but maybe everything will be set up just swap the motor.I've been studying very hard on this and still undicided. One option is go back stock and later build me a Hot Rod cart, but building the 350 is geting into Vtwin price range,so I'm looking at that to.I have a friend with a Artic Cat 350 ATV running gear in his, motor, rear and all, and it looks like a stock cart, but a lot faster. He has just $500 in that.I kinda want to keep my first a little simple and learn the basics first on a low budget.

Waterbug, check into rotation clock or counter and shaft size for what clutch you will need.

Re: Older Briggs 16 Twin
There has been members here swap in the opposed twins. I think the opposed twin is a little wider than the V-twin but it still fits.

Re: Older Briggs 16 Twin
I would take a long hard look at the benifits of this conversion before I took the super reliable stock 350 out of a workhorse.... You could remove the stock govenor and have near the same speed you will get ... I don't think a single cylinder 16 (is that what it is?) is going to give you what you are looking for ?

Re: Older Briggs 16 Twin
It is an opposed twim. The max rpms for those was adound 3600 rpm. Not a very reliable
motor. i have a bunch of them with broken rods. the v twin is much better. |

Re: Older Briggs 16 Twin
Whats wrong with the 350, if you don't mind me asking ??
Those are pretty beefy motors in their own right..I am on the lookout for a pretty solid 350 for a future use.. I just more or less reassembled a 295 that was in a box, and it is performing well with minimal parts replacement..It might be worth it to do the same with yours, and then use the 16 in another frame you run across. Anyway, regards.. ! |
