Default 10hp diesel engine question

Hey guys I'm new here and getting ready to build my first cart its a 97 EZ Go txt that has a blown engine I've been looking into 16hp clone engines and also 10hp diesel engines that they use on generators ( had one before and we couldn't load it down enough on the gennerator ) I was thinking the diesel would be a better fit than the clone and still be able to have the power that the cart needs. Both engines have a 1in. shaft so figure i would get a comet 780 clutch to go with it and use a ccp engine carrier

Oh forgot to mention that the diesel has the cylinder straight up unlike the clone which is at a 45 degree or something like that

Any imput would be greatly appriciated thanks guys

I think it depends upon what you want the cart to do? The diesel may be okay for ranch or farm work... I'm not a big fan of the clone engine. One thing that is worth considering is the working rpm range of the diesel and the needs of the cart in terms of rpms?

ya the only thing w the diesel is that it might pull hard till about 15mph. just saying it might not have the rpms you need to get any speed. unless you try some high speed gears along with it.

Most diesels turn about 3200 rpm and the stock engines are over 4000. So, on paper, it woud only go 12 or 13 MPH. With the torque of most diesels, you could put 8:1 in the rear and make it semi fast. Maybe....
I love diesels, they are tough and run forever...but, that fuel stinks!

Diesels have nearly double the torque of an equivalent displacement gas engine and the fuel economy is nearly double. The smell of napalm/diesel is sweet.

I think I am with radical and doug on this one the cart will be used to go through trails ( I live 20 miles from a national forest ) and to pull my buddys out of mudholes when they are on there four wheelers around here in florida i'm not looking to break any speed records or anything, this diesel will turn 3600rpm (governed) all day and i think a 8:1 gear would still give me the speed and torque that i would need.

And plus everything needs stacks and black smoke its the american way lol

Thanks Scottyb you made my choice when you said you didn't like the clone, I wasn't a big fan either, I just want to do something kinda inexpensive and also have something unique at the same time.

Thanks all
