Default 18 hp opposed twin clutch in a G9

I'm putting an 18 hp Briggs opposed twin engine in my Yamaha G9. I bought a new comet clutch for the stock engine 4 years ago. Can I get a spring to put in it so it won't engage while the engine is idling. If so, can anyone tell me which spring to get? Once I get everything ready to install, I will post some pictures.

clayfor, I'm thinking your best bet would be to contact Tom at cart parts plus for your clutch issues. I know he sold the comets when they were still in business. Tom seems to know as much about them as anybody, and he probably has the parts you may or may not need. Hope this was helpful.

Thanks Guys,
I will contact Tom at CPP. I don't think the stock comet clutch has a spring in it at all, because as soon as the engine starts it starts moving into the belt. That's on my stock G9 engine and I know that the Briggs will have to idle at a higher RPM than the stock engine starts at. Any thoughts?

Okay All. I talked to Tom and he said that he didn't have any experience using the 94C clutch with a briggs engine. Does anybody else know what setup to use in this clutch? I want it to be able to idle, but not high rpm to get it to move like a snowmobile. Somebody else has had to use a 94C clutch with a briggs engine! I need to know what color spring and how many weights. HELP!!!

The 94C that was factory calibrated for 4 stroke engines came with the pink spring ( P/N 205858 ) and six pucks, P/N 206514. The puck P/N is for the round smooth, not the ribbed cover. This is a lot of weight (mass) with a relatively weak spring, engages about 2100 RPM.

Flintrock,
Thanks!! I ordered the pink spring. I already have the 6 pucks in the 94C. It was setup for a snowmobile with and orange spring in it. What would happen if I only used 3 pucks? Just wondering.

You will have less mass, resulting in a higher engagement RPM, less top end and you may not have enough mass to keep the faces from slipping. There are lots of variables in clutch tuning. With an opposed I think you want all the weight you can get. Speaking of weights, which ones are in it now?
