Default New to Carts, want to build something with ATV parts and old electric cart.

Hello guys,

Ive been watching this forum for a while, and you guys do some amaizing things with these carts.. I like to fabricate, and have a small shop in my garage, and have decided to build a cart. My plan is to find an old electric or gas car to convert. I know it would be better to get a gas cart, because i can use the rear end, but the only place i know to look is craigs list, and there seem to be a lot more cheep electrics than gas carts. Does anyone know a better place to find a very cheap used up cart? My plan is to use a salvaged atv or atvs to build the front suspension for the cart as well as parts for the rear, and the engine. Im thinking something in the 250cc-400cc 4 stroke range, i will try to get something that already has reverse as well. If i do end up getting an electric cart, is there any way i can still use its rear end with the new motor, i havent seen any info on the forums here for that. Also any advice from people that have done this same thing would be great.

Thanx

Adam

Hey Adam,
Maybe consider using the rear end, suspension & brakes from the ATV?

Good luck. Lookin forward to seeing with you can do with it.

Just throwing this at you. Depends what the use of the cart will be. For dirt/property/hunting, the straight axle system would work really well. For street/golf course use, not so well. The front suspension would be much superior. Straight axles are like "Posi/Locked" rear ends in race car's. They want to go straight, if you turn the front wheels, the rear want's to "skid/hop". Lastley, most 4 cycle golf car engines are 300cc or more, you would gain shifting gears, but not much more HP. Just some thoughts.

Thank you, this answers a lot! I live in a sub division that is close to some trails, so it would be more for crusin around the sub division and to the trails.. so i think straight axle would work out just fine. As far as power goes, im not looking for any kind of power house, just something to play around on.. so around 300-400cc should work.

Thanx!

Welcome to BGW Adam

If you are like a lot of us, it will never be done! Put that 300-400 cc in it will be fun. Just save some room for the 600-800 cc down the road.

Ok, so i think i found my cart, its an 82 ezgo electric. Now to find a motor, after some thinking, i plant to just do a small lift with the stock suspension for now, just to keep my first build simple

I have a solid axle in mine with a 1000 CC engine, if you want to turn sharp, mash the gas and turn the wheel. LOL.
