Default 23 briggs not revving/stumbling

I have a 23 horse briggs kit in my cart. came from cpp with the high performance cam and rev kit installed. motor seems to rev fine till about 4600. After that it doesn't seem to go any higher. this is while driving or with tranny in neutral and sitting still.

other thing i have a slight issue with is that if i floor it from a dead stop it hesitates a couple seconds and them revs and takes off.

i installed a new cc fuel pump when i put in the engine about 12 hours ago.

any ideas as to what motor shoud rev to( i was thinking it should go mid 5k?) and what coudl cause my stumbling from take off issue?

thanks for any and all input.

Aaron, I think you should be safely getting close to 6k with that motor setup. The problems you are having sound like carb problems. Have you called Tom to ask him yet?

Aaron,
I was having similar issues with my Honda. Turns out It was not breathing. I opened up the intake with a UNI filter and opened the muffler (super trap). Now I actually have to choke it back a little.

Hope this helps

I have bothered him quite a bit already with silly questions. He told me earlier not to rev it over 5500 so i am going to respect that as much as i can. i was hoping for some other input as well.

Scott how much louder did the supertrap make it? I'm currently running his stainless header with the briggs muffler that came with his kit. We can still carry on a conversation without yelling while cruising down the road.

i suppose i could pull the airfilter off and see if it breathes a lil bit better in the garage. I hate doing that but the air in there is pretty clean already.

i wonder if there is a k&n that fits in the stock briggs holder?? hmmm

i was wondering if it could be starving for fuel? i wonder what others are using?

Thanks for the ideas..

Aaron, The super trap is kinda cool. You can tune it to what ever you need / want it to be. For running around the hood I keep 2 disks in it. It's almost as load as a stock 4 wheeler. If I want to be stealth I'll use 1 and it's quieter than my push mower. When I want to play a little I'll put 4 to 6 disks in and it's about as load as a Harley with a Rinehart type pipe.

I like it cause I can make it whatever I want.

I'm running a k&n in my 18 briggs, it fits the stock housing. I got it from Tom at CPP, more air flow is good. How level is your engine sitting?

hmmm it isn't that level. the front is quite a bit higher. will that have a huge affect? i mean you will be going up and down and across grades at times.

I ran a supertrapp on my sand rail when i had it. was a turbo 2.3 ford engine. it was kinda loud there though.

i checked the k&N site. they listed no cross for a 23. had one for everything else though:(

15 degrees max on the 18 for continuous operation.

From my experiance with Tom, He doesn't seem to care about the calls as much as helping your bigblock function as best as it can. I agree with Ess about the Supertrap, it's so tuneable, you can take or add disc's to run at the noise level you can handle and back pressure the motor needs. As for the "stumble", It's really part of the engine/carb set up. Remember they were desighned for idle or a rpm limit. You can try to clean the carb/ send it out for special work (like Flint was going to do) or try a Mikuni set up. The Performance adapter K & N set is a nice st up too. Good luck Dave
