Default Comet clutch help

I got my kart out for it's first test ride today after 5 months of working on it!! All was good except for the fact that the comet clutch system was not engaging all the way. I have a Comet 94C (model 209739A) drive clutch and a Comet 90D (model 212301A) driven clutch. The setup seems to be aligned just perfect and such, BUT it is only engaging about 1/2 of the way it should engage. The primary and secondary (under load - ie... me driving down the road) will get to about 1/2 half way through their nrmal range of motion and go no further (verified through the use of the sharpie marker test). This means that I am getting less than half the power I should be getting. Interestingly enough, if I jack up the rear end and run the engine up, the clutches will fully engage (ie... no load)?!?!?!

The engine is a Honda GX670 which is brand new. The engine idles at 1400 RPM or so and and is governed to 3600 rpm. The clutch engages at about 1800 rpm or so. The clutch is all stock and is brand new. It drive clutch has the weakest spring they offer for this setup which is the pink (or at least it is the weakest I know of) and it has 6 206514A pucks which are the 53 gram pucks - pentagonal shaped. It has 9 slots available for pucks, so I can still add some if necessary. I was thinking of adding 3 more of the 59 gram pucks to get it to activate just a little sooner, probably 200 rpm sooner in hopes of getting it to get enough momentum to get the clutches to fully engage!!

Any ideas??? Any advice? I dont think they make a weaker spring, so I think my only other choice is to add more, and heavier, weights?? Of course the weights are hard to come by now too because of Comet going out of business so if you have a source for those PLEASE let me know!!!!

Anybody know of a source for the Pentagonal Activator pucks???

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I put a tach on the engine to check out the rpm output. First off, the engine from the factory had the throttle linkage screw at the lowest rpm setting which on the first day I took it out it spun the clutch up about 50% as tested by the sharpie markings on the clutch faces. So I adjusted the stop screw all the way out and did some static (no load) testing and apparently the screw alone adjusts the top rpm by 800 rpm, with the top rpm at 3600 or so. So I bought an aftermarket governor spring and made a quick adjustment to the stop screw and did a quick run up and down the street and it appears that the clutch is fully engaged and I am showing 4600 rpm on the tach. It accelerates like a 4 stroke snowmobile, and once going is pretty breath taking. I ordered some mid-weight weights for the clutch and I am going to put them in the 3 empty slots so it will engage at a lower rpm. I will still toy with it to get it to engage at just the perfect rpm.

I also have a 94C clutch model#206094 ( I got from my neighbor). it had the 205918 pucks in it with the orange spring (For a sled). I took apart my comet clutch that was on my stock engine and found 9 - 211482 pucks and a black spring. They are pentagon shape and weigh 54 grams. This clutch reacted too slow. I was able to put these pucks in my neighbors 94C #206094 clutch with a little sanding to remove the peaks to match the 205918 pucks. I also went to Ace hardware and they had a very light spring that was too long and I cut it off to match the orange spring in height ($1.50). I added a total of 6 of the heavy pucks 211482 and 3 of the lighter pucks 205918 with the light spring. I'm running an 18 Hp Briggs. It now idles good and I can still shift it while it's running. It has great throttle response and the clutch really engages well. I now need 6 more of the heavy weights to put back into my stock clutch so I can give it to my neighbor. I hope this helps. I have worked for a long time trying to figure out what to do. I didn't want to shell out the smackers for a new clutch.

Certified Parts Corporation acquires certain assets of Hoffco/Comet
Certified Parts Corporation (CPC), the Janesville, Wis.-based company that purchased TecumsehPower Feb. 9, 2009, acquired certain assets of Hoffco/Comet in an auction Dec. 17.

CPC purchased Hoffco/Comet’s intellectual property, dies, fixtures and tooling, as well as its entire existing parts inventory, shelf by shelf. Although the shelves were somewhat bare, CPC still bought a large quantity of parts. CPC intends to maintain a complete line of replacement parts and is very confident that it will be able to manufacture complete finished product in the near future. Comet was in business for 60 years, making clutches for some of the world’s best known manufacturers.

“It’s a huge marriage between the Tecumseh engine and the Comet torque converter, which is a variable-speed transmission,” said Jim Grafft, President and CEO of CPC. “They also made a gear box that we are excited about.”

CPC hopes to start shipping in January 2010. “We have talked to many of the main vendors, and they are excited that someone has taken over and they are looking forward to shipping us new parts,” added Grafft.

Any company that had back orders with Hoffco/Comet, can email their inquiries or orders to CPC at cpc@certifiedpartscorp.com or fax them to (60 752-3528.

With your help we can get this great American company back up and running!

Thank you,

Thanks Essness, well there you have it start pestering them lol. You might try a Polaris sled dealer I dunno, they used to carry a lot of the parts because they used comets.
