Default CRACKedHEAD

I need to replace the rear cyl. head on my 18hp Vanguard. I have some questions on what I can use to replace it. Are the heads on the vertical shaft engines the same as mine? Are the heads on the 16-18-20hp Vanguards interchangeable. I'm assuming the front and rear heads are the same. I'm afraid to ask how much the lawnmower shop wants for one. Is there a better deal on a gasket kit than getting HOZED by the lawnmower shop? I wonder why the head cracked? Thanks in advance

The 14,16,18,20 HP Vanny heads will interchange between horz. or vert. engines.. There IS a difference between the left and right heads, so be sure of what you are buying.. Also, check with an auto machine shop in your area, cracks in the valve area of aluminum cylinder heads can be successfully welded and repaired..

THANKS,............ I'm easily confused... looking at my engine in the picture I've removed the head from the end where the oil filter is. Is THAT #2?

I think of it as the rear 'cause that's the way it sits in the cart

UHHH, went out and looked at it, I see the difference

According to the Briggs Vanguard service manual...

When looking at the engine facing the flywheel housing, the number 1 cylinder will be to your left, the number 2 cylinder will be to your right..

You could try Pats Small Engine Plus psep.biz

I've used them several times--probably cheaper than the lawnmower shop.

Also check out Tulsa Engine Warehouse, and Jack's Small Engines.. I've used both several times over the years, and they beat the hell out of the local mower shops..

Thanks, according to the manual and looking at my picture I'm thinkin' I need #1. Don't need a pair but I wonder what the pair will go for. While it's apart is this a good time to learn about the governor inside the engine?

Governor removal goes much further into engine teardown than removing the cylinder heads. You are removing side covers, cam, oil pump etc. Not THAT technical and if you were going to do it anyway, by all means pull the motor and do it all at once!

Tulsa Engine Warehouse has the head in the E-Bay link for $125.89.. Really not a bad price for a BRAND NEW head.. If you're gonna mess with the governor, go ahead and get the performance camshaft from CPP.. You'll kill two birds at once, you'll lose the governor, and the compression release, plus you'll pick up a nice boost in power..
