Geo Metro power Marketeer... M35 Deuce and a half!

Hello all,

So here is the deal. My father bought an 60's electric Westinghouse Marketeer cart a few years ago. After tinkering with it for a year he decided that is was not destined to remain electric powered for long.

He bought the cart to use at a members only campground that he is a member of. Most of the folks out there have golf carts for them and there grand kids and what not. My dad wants to do something unique. So I started doing a bit of research on carts and power systems.

I have been into Suzuki Samurais for years and know them very well. So I knew that I would pull a lot of parts for that direction. The Geo Metro is basically the same as a Samurai motor, minus one cylinder. And this motor will bolt right up to a stock Samurai transmission. This will limit me to only being able to use a manual transmission but that is not a problem.

We also wanted to change the look of the rig. We decided on making it look like a military AM General M35A2, better know as a Deuce and a half. We have not started on any of the bodywork yet. We have started to tear down the car.

At this point we have the cart ready for stretching. It looks like we will need to stretch the frame by at least 18". Maybe up to 24". We have been kicking around the idea of adding a second read axle to complete the look for the M35A2. We also plan to model the M35 as a wrecker. Many of the kids at the campsite will run the golf carts down till the batteries are flat. We wanted to be able to use the M35 to be a recover vehicle for the camp.

So I will start taking pictures as we progress. I plan to have some pics on here tomorrow.

So, I had a chance look at the Metro today. It appears that someone cut the main wiring harness in the engine bay! My younger brother set about fixing the wiring while I started tinkering with the motor and scoping out what other parts I can pirate from the car to use on the cart.

After we got the wiring sorted we tried to get the motor started. But... We've got no fuel and no spark to the motor. At this point I noticed that distributor did not look right for some reason. It seems that someone installed the dizzy from a later model Metro. It did not have the vacuum advance unit. Upon a close look I also noticed that the newer dizzys DO NOT have an igniter in it. In the truck of the car I Found the original dizzy, but I will have to test the igniter and the hall trigger switch.

The no full issue is also perplexing. The best I can figure at this point is that the ECU is SHOT. I fear that it was shorted out when some ***-HAT cut the harness. HOWEVER... I do not need the computer for what I have in-store! I plan to run this motor with a Harley-Davidson CV carb. I had a homebrew 40 mm CV setup on my Samurai and it ran like a champ. I figure that I will need to source a smaller CV from a Sportster 883, one of the 36 - 38 mm carbs.

Alright Gents!

Here are a few pictures of the cart and the powertrain.

So today we confirmed that the computer is toast. We want to get the engine running in the car before we pull it from the car. So we decided to just bypass everything. We will use a universal ignition switch and eliminate the computer. As for the fuel system, that is where it gets fun!

Here is a picture of my old Samurai. Its running a Harley CV carb from a 1200 Sportster.


I plan to do a similar setup here. My dad had a pair of carbs from an old Yamaha Virago 535 sitting on a shelf. I had to separate the carbs as they share throttle and choke linkages. The carbs have been sitting for a while so the gasket are questionable. I will not know if I have a leak till I put fuel to it.

I shall build an intake adapter similar to what I built for the samurai intake. In this case the adapter will just point up as the carb is a down draft carb with a side hung fuel bowl. I was able to get the adapter about halfway finished before we called a day.
