Default Goals: Eliminate Hot seat and quiet down 23hp Briggs

Hello,

I just got a 23hp Briggs twin installed on my ezgo. The first thing my wife said while riding in the back seat was "my legs are hot", the second thing she said is "it sure is loud".

So in an effort to keep mamma happy on our suburban assault vehicle I come to you for help.

I saw that CPP makes a header that is supposed to address the heat issue but will these make the cart even louder?

If so is there some way I can use those for the heat issue then add another muffler to it to quite her down a bit? If i can what has been used in this application?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have one of CPP's 23 Vanny kits in my EZGO.. I just reworked the exhaust on it this weekend.. I have Tom's SS header, I cut it down at the "Y" and welded on a 1 1/2" "collector".. Hauled the cart to the muffler shop and had a couple of 1 1/2" pipes bent to connect the muffler.. The muffler is for an Onan RV genset application (Walker pt# 22769).. It has a nice deep, mellow tone with none of the raspy "lawnmower" sound..

If you're still running the stock gears, a lot of noise can be reduced by switching to a set of 8:1 Hi-Speed gears.. This will lower the "cruising" RPM and the noise along with it.. I have a set of 8:1's and my "cruising" speed w/22" tires is 26MPH @ 3600 RPM.. With the new exhaust I can actually hold a conversation without having to shout..

The 23 is just a noisy engine, the 2bbl carburetor makes for a lot of intake noise

CC-John,

Pardon my ignorance but can you post a link to a 1.1/2 collector. I found the headers and the muffler but not sure exactly what collector to buy.

Thanks! Im going to go with the exact set up you have. I really appreciate your help.

Your ezgo looks awesome! Heres my mine:

Thanks!! You got a pretty awesome ride yourself!!

The "collector" was just a short exhaust pipe adapter I picked up at O'Reilly Auto Parts.. Marwil part no. 548520, 1 3/8" OD X 1 1/2" ID.. I beat the small end into an oval shape, and shaped one side with a pair of pliers to fit the cut end of the header.. I bolted the header to a scrap of wood to prevent warping while welding the adapter on the end.. You have to use a "stitch" welding method on the thin tubing used in the header and adaptor to prevent warping.. The outlet end also received a pair of 3/4" long saw cuts 180* apart to allow the exhaust pipe to be securely clamped, yet easily removable for servicing the driven clutch, or having to slide the engine fore or aft to adjust the drive belt..

That big generator muffler breathes pretty good, it has 1 5/8" ID ports with a side inlet.. It's mounting bracket is a short piece of 1"x1" angle drilled to mount under a pair of axle tube bolts on the driver's side.. The muffler is attached to the bracket with a 4" exhaust pipe clamp.. Here's some better pics of the muffler and bracket, and a side shot of the tailpipe.. I had to clip the corner of the bracket behind the driven clutch to clear the movable sheave during operation..

Fishiest,

Post up some pics of the rear of your cart.. It looks like it has the "Workhorse" rear body on it.. That body was never designed for use with a rear seat, the bottom of the cargo box is the "top" of the body.. If your dealer didn't make a panel to fully seal off the top of the body when the seat was installed, that would explain the heat and noise in the rear seat area.. The standard plastic TXT rear bodies totally enclose the rear of the cart, forcing the engine heat and noise under the cart to be expelled out the rear..

Here's a pic of my cart right after I got it, it came with the "flip-flop" rear seat.. I had the seat on it for a while after installing the Vanny, before replacing it with a cargo box.. There were no heat issues for the rear seat passengers after the Vanny swap, in fact the rear seat was cooler than the front seat.. That Vanny is churning out some serious amounts of hot air right under your butt.. The front of the body under the seat and the seat bottom will get pretty warm on a long-winded ride..

It could be part of it, depending on how the dealer closed up the top of the body before installing the rear seat.. Most of the Workhorse, ST350, ST480 carts with that type of rear body will need a panel fabricated to close up the top of the body when the cargo box is removed.. The ones I've seen with a rear seat fitted, had a sheet of aluminum diamond plate cut to completely cover the top of the body before the seat is mounted..
