35hp carb on build 23hp vanny
I have had problems with the stock carb on my 23hp vanguard since it was on it. Hard starting bad idle- once past the 2,200RPM mark pretty smooth. I got my hands on a 35hp carb- it bolts on so i said what the heck give it a try. It starts 10 times better idles smooth. Still stumbles pretty bad on mashing the gas but seems healthier once up above that. Im sure jetting is way off so I know something needs to be done.
Curious if anyone else has tried this or had success with the 35hp carb? Can you buy jets for the carb or do I need to send it out- whats involved? Who has sent there carb out to EC and what is your success with there Built carb for the $200. I talked with George at EC for a will and seems like he has the answers and know what to do to get it right on. I really need to get the stumble out to make it run hard from the 1,200RPM all the way up. Cart is being raced on sand drags so the stumble is killing it right now. Any thoughts? |

Re: 35hp carb on build 23hp vanny
CCjohn had a fix for that and I can,t find the thread.
It involved milling a port in the carb mounting face. |

Re: 35hp carb on build 23hp vanny
I thinking of still trying the mill the intake neck but don't want to until I decide if im sending out to Ec carb. George from ec guarantees his built carb port and polish on my carb will work but curious if any of you guys have used him? and what your results were.

*Really interested in this, currently going to borrow a 35hp engine's carb to try on my tuned 23hp Vannie. The port that you mention that can be milled across the two inlet tracts is similar to the carb spacer that PVT sell, which is an alloy copy of the stock black plastic spacer under the elbow, but with the two holes joined together; this lets each cylinder suck on both carb throats at once. Downside is poor running on mine at lower revs, upside is more power at full revs and full throttle, but no stumble on pickup at all found. When I did the sums it turned out the stock carb is about 75% of the size of the manifold, but when you join them together it is 50% overcarburated if both chokes feed. Restricting the crossfeed size helps but you still get odd effects like one cylinder running rich and too cool, and a sooty exhaust However using a seperated 30mm carb off the 35hp might cure this, can you tell us more? Re: 35hp carb on build 23hp vanny
Hello Shawn
Don't understand, after searching for a thread that might help me and others, it was raised to see what could be learned. Impossible to stay in one thread when some are looking at machining a balance port, and another at swapping for the carb off the next size up engine. The two solutions for more power are interrelated, a buggy racer who can change oil after every race and is always stripping the unit can get cheap power with a link port, however I want an engine perfectly set up that will run economically and give best range, yet develop the same power that a link port gives. Hopefully someone who has gotten hold of a 35hp Vannie carb and bolted it to their 23 will be happy to post their results. One useful note, the stock inlet elbow needs opening up, otherwise the butterflies on the bigger carb catch, or will the bigger elbow fit the 23hp inlet manifold? Cheers Kev A UK |

just common curtsy -- most of your posts have been in the other carb mod thread. It is usually helpful to just keep posting in the one current thread.
for the most part their are not a lot of people on this site modifying their carbs. the guys who modify their carbs I have have already mentioned. mainly heymow.com has the most info on modify the 35p carb to run on a 35ci 20hp motor or the 38ci 21/23hp motors. or reference the other hot build sticky that I have posted that has the recipes for building your motor to a different level |

Hi Shawn Curtsy is what we do to our Queen Glad you pointed me at the Heymow forum, got some useful stuff but went through 70-odd pages and couldn't see a link to anyone fitting a 35 carb on a 23hp Vanguard. If you know the link I'd appreciate it, otherwise you have at least told me it is possible and has been done, so maybe I should just go do this... Kev |
