Default Charging rate for a Vangaurd

Did a search, but didn't find anything. What is the charging rate supossed to be? I would think 14.5 to 15.5 volts. The reason I ask is Wilson's getting finicky about turning over. Volt meter says 12.5 volts, then carnk volts drop to 10 to even less volts sometimes. When reving up, volts never go over 12.9 volts. Yes I bought this special sized battery from "Budget Battery", so shame on me. Any spec's would be appreciated. Wilson's going to 2 events this month and needs a new home, but not with a no start/hesitation problem. Thanks Dave

From CPP website, both 18 and 23 hp have a 16 Amp alternator with regulator.

Thanks Ron. 16 amp alternator with voltage reg..but what does that transfer into volts? Could you check "Bad Boy's" reading? Thanks again buddy

Dave, I'm gonna catch heck from somebody here, but, the amps on a Vanny are determined by the size of the magnets on the flywheel, either 10 or 16 amps. But that just determines the "rate" of re-charge 16 being faster than 10. You still should have at least around 14 volts in order to overcome resistance and normal battery drain when running. In automotive applications you are correct in saying between 14.4 and 15.3 or so. I would think no different in the Vanny but have never tested one. Maybe it's a problem with your voltage regulator?

Dave
Take voltage reading at battery, Should be roughly 12. While starting should stay around 11. At 2000 rpm battery voltage should be around 14. If starting battery drops below 11 its toast. If 2000 rpm does not give 14v regulator or charging problem. Most motors with cam will not always turn over on first attempt as performance cam does not have decompressor like stock cam. There is a HD starter for the vannys will roll over even the super modifieds on the first try.

Thanks Tom. Ok, charged the battery and volt meter at 2000 to 4500 only climbed to 13.9 volt (very slowly). Tried a new battery and had even less voltage charging rate. Does anyone have service manual tests for the charging circuit? Maybe a wiring diagram (maybe a wire came off, don't think so because it is trying to charge)? Don't want to buy and replace parts till I know what's wrong. Tom, with the battery charged, engine turns over before I let the key off. Thanks for all the help guy's.

Dave sounds like its charging. We spec or motors with the 16 amp regulated system. But they do also have a 5 amp maybe your has the smaller setup. Look at voltage reg, The 16 amp system has two yellow wires going in one red out. Small system only has one yellow wire.

Now for the test, If you do have the larger system set meter to AC and check voltage between two yellow wires should be about 30 at 3000rpm
