Default New build need Ideas

Hi I am new to the forums here, Ive been working on golf carts my whole life and have built more than a few. But they are all the same ole same ole build. A arm front, my own three link rear honda motor and billet........

but I recently came across an st 480 with a blown motor! which is sweet cause the rear end is a cable locking rear end!

Here's the deal. I want to haul *** take it to the dunes and race it around. I thought about a street bike motor but don't want to have to do a tremendous amount of fab work and spend a bunch of money on shocks and everything else.
I still want reverse and I am leaning big time into a snowmobile motor.

since I grew up in phx az I know nothing about snowmobiles...... any ideas what motor will fit without hacking the frame up???? problems people have run into... water cooled air cooled? I have seen a few threads on here with guys that have done it, so now I need your help!

Thanks for any help!!!!!!!!!!!

Drop a 23 Vanguard with cam and rev kit, and a set of 8:1 gears in it.. That'll easily get ya to 40MPH.. The 23 will bolt right in place of the stock 16HP Vanny in the 480's..

You might end up with some clearance issues with the 35, it's wider and taller than the "small block" Vannys.. Also performance parts are few and pricey.. The 23 with a cam and rev kit is good for a dependable 30 HP with mountains of torque.. Hot-Rodding a 18-23 horse Vanny is like souping up a small block Chevy, parts are cheap and plentiful..

My TXT gasser with a lightly modded 23 and 8:1's will easily hit 40 MPH on the top end, and pull like a locomotive getting there.. Stomping it from a dead stop on dry pavement will easily put 6 inches of air under the front tires with two people in the front seat.. I could drop in a set of 6:1 gears for some loss in bottom end, but the top end would be up in the 55+ MPH range..

I didn't know that people even build these motors! is the rev kit electrical? like a rev limiter? where would I get these parts from?

The "Rev-Kit" is a shaved flywheel key to advance the ignition timing, a set of hardened valve spring retainers, a pair of steel pushrods to replace the OEM aluminum exhaust pushrods, and a set of shims for the valve springs to eliminate valve float.. With a hot camshaft and the rev-kit these engines will dependably spool up to 5500-6000 RPM... A 23 with the cam and rev-kit will put out about 30 or so horsepower..

A good place to get performance parts is Cart Parts Plus..

do you have to pull the head to put in the valve spring spacers? I assume so?

that is pretty **** cool! so the 23 is the biggest small block? sounds like thats what I need.

If the heads from the 16hp are good can I build a stroker motor with the 16hp heads on a 23hp block?

I just feed a handful of 1/4" nylon rope thru the plug hole with the piston at the bottom of the stroke, roll it over until the piston compresses the rope against the head of the valves, compress and remove the springs, drop in the shims, swap out the retainers, and button it back up.. Roll it back, and pull the rope out, repeat on the other hole..

The 16 heads will give you a helluva compression boost when installed on a 23, you'll be feeding it Premium or higher.. The 14/16 (29,30 Cu. In.) heads are a better swap on the 18/20(35 Cu. In.) Vannys, than the 23's (38 Cu. In.)...
