About to dive into my first conversion...a couple questions
Okay I am about to begin undertaking my first conversion to a big block. Here is what I have so far:
I am picking up an ezgo cart on Friday...not sure of the exact year as he is getting a shipment and is letting me get "pick of the litter" so to say as I don't mind a blown motor and he doesn't mind not having to rebuild one. He said it should be a 2000 or newer cart but could be as old as a 1999. I have a 20hp Honda vtwin (gx620) that is older but has the charging system, can muffler (that will get replaced) key switch, etc. It is a running motor off of a piece of equipment we are scrapping. I am lucky enough that it is a 1" shaft with 1/4" keyway which I believe will mate up to the original clutch. As soon as I know the model/year I plan on ordering a lift kit as well to get this thing raised up. For now I am going to go with the more economical spindle lift system as it fits my budget better and my wife does not like the look of the the long travel kit. Onto my questions now: 1. Will the stock ezgo clutch from these years work with this cart temporarily? I plan on eventually putting the new 6 serie clutch from cpp but may have to wait until after the first of the year to get it. 2. Can I modify the current motor mount plate to accept this motor or will I have to modify/fabricate a new one. I plan on a 5" lift as of now but can go to a 7" if need be to salvage the current mount system. 3. Are there performance parts readily available for this Honda motor? I would like to put some parts in it to jump it from 20hp to 25-30 hp if possible. 4. The motor has sat in a garage for around 5 years because after we replaced it the hydraulic system went out so it was almost as cheap to replace it. Is changing the oil, cleaning the carbs, changing the plugs, and decarboning the cylinders all I need to do to crank it up again? 5. What else will I need for this conversion? It will be a week or so until I can get my lift kit shipped in and installed so I want to part gather during this time if possible. |

Re: About to dive into my first conversion...a couple questions
To answer some of your questions....
1. The stock EZGO drive clutches are designed to mount to a tapered shaft.. You can either have the clutch machined to fit a straight, keyed shaft, or purchase an adapter from Cart Parts Plus... Tapered Clutch Adapter 2. The easiest way to install anything other than the stock engine in a gas EZGO is with one of Cart Parts Plus' EZGO engine cradles.. It eliminates excessive engine angles caused by installing a lift kit, and will make clutch alignment easier.. EZGO Engine Cradle 3. Performance parts for the Hondas are not as plentiful as for the Briggs Vanguard engines.. The ones that are available tend to be more expensive than their Briggs counterparts.. 4. Clean the carburetor, change the oil, pop in a set of fresh plugs and fire it up.. If it runs, it'll get a good "de-carboning" lugging a golf cart around.. |
