Default So I think I need a Big Block!...............

Biggest question I have, and can't find, is, will the stock rear end and gears hold up to the 23 HP Vanguard? I plan on plowing snow with it, and being just 2wd, I know theres gonna be some torque on the rear with the weight I'm gonna put in the bed. What other options have you all looked into if the rear end wont hold up?

Rear end will handle it just fine.

Cart place here plows their lot with a CC. They fill the box with cement blocks, put chains on the rear tires, and have a soft cab on it. Its not lifted.

Those rears are made to last 50 years I think. What really helps is the CVT system is very soft on the trans, unlike a gear trans that gets shock loads. If you wheel hopped it on pavement or something harsh like that then you might eventually break it.

My next concern is I would really like it to sound more like a 4 wheeler/UTV/Rhino instead of a lawn mower........listened to a few on you tube and not impressed at all. Maybe I need to look for a wrecked 4 wheeler or something?

Tom, How much of a difference will your header make?

Sounds good NewGuy!

We put a turbo car muffler on the 16hp clone, it is medium loudness I suppose. It sounds very deep, like a 20hp single cylinder kohler or maybe a single cylinder road bike....half a harley? He likes it, I don't (for my cart) that much I want mine quieter. It also has no tailpipe off the muffler that changes the sound. It really thumps when he lets off the pedal to stop you can hear it in the house, its really deep sounding. Its not that loud driving it, I'll have to post video. It looks like a normal car turbo muffler, I think its straight through but it does reverse inside....no baffles, no spot weld marks anywhere.

If you want the quad sound all you need to do is get a used quad muffler off ebay or where ever.

I read up on mufflers and the basics are stuffed (fiberglass packing) mufflers take out the high sounds but pass the low rumbles (glass packs, some cheap turbo muffs). They often have pipe inside full of tiny holes that go straight through and the packing is outside the pipes, also many ATV use these excepting the large large or square mufflers. The chambered mufflers are the opposite and pass the high sounds but block the low rumbles (think flowmasters). They have baffles and tuned pipes in them, tuned chambers, etc. Some mufflers are a combo of the two. The stuffed mufflers tend to be high flow due to straight piping inside, while the chambered mufflers have to be built larger or carefully to still flow a lot. Many stock very quiet mufflers are mostly chambered designs while flowmasters are minimal chambering for high flow.

Next question......Briggs or Honda ? Not a lot of price difference from what I've seen. Honda's have always been a bit more reliable in my opinion........

AND!!! 20, 23, 24 ? What HP ? Bigger is always better right? RIGHT ?

I've been told the Vanguard is the best but may be some opinion in there, you could not get much in parts for the Hondas not long ago. The B&S you get a rev kit for ~100 and you are all set and can get tons of performance parts for them. Was also told the 18 and 20Hp vanguard is the same and they will go the fastest with only a rev kit due to shorter stroke or something so they rev higher. The vanguard and kawasaki you can run somewhat hard with no mods at all even a rev kit, but if you will be winding them hard for top speeds you should, if you had huge tall tires and some sense you can get away without lol, but at that cost you might as well. Was told a Honda you better have a rev kit to go over around 4.5K while the other two will do 5K stock. The larger HP will have more torque, meaning more bottom end and harder takeoff, better on big hills, on the other hand most any twin will spin the tires climbing in dirt/etc. even a 16hp clone single will. I just put a clone in and it does not want to wind up that high trying to figure out what it needs, but high speed is not that important to the guy anyway. It goes as fast or better than stock, gets there way quicker. NewGuy says he is about 10mph faster with a B&S than the clone roughly 30 to 40mph. I can get over 30 gps with the larger intake and exhaust I have on it but it lays down up there. On the other hand its less than half the cost. Note the Vanguard is an Asian engine too. If anyone has different info please post.

I think it depends what you want from it. Do you just need torque or horse power? It seems the 23 vannys are the best of both worlds. If you want more speed you need more rpms from the engine unless you re-gear the rearend, but you will loose some torque. I was thinking like you about a honda engine, but they are pricey. Id only get one if it was a good *** price and wanted to keep it stcok. The vannys seem to hold up nicely as it seems people on this sight have proven the reliabilty with hteir carts as I am sure a lot have pushed them to the limits.

I was working with commercial equipment when the vanguard came out. The only problem I saw much of was the plastic gear on the starter. One time I started one with my foot. It died and guy took the cowl off the flywheel. Well, that equipment was all hydraulic so I would have to winch the thing all the way on the trailer with tires sliding....unless I could get it to run. I kick started it with the heel of my workboots on the cooling fins. Took about 6 tries, get it on compression and stomp it. Drove it on the trailer saved about 20 minutes of winching around....the guy looked at me and just shook his head lol. We warrantied anything that went wrong with them.

Yeah the torque will set you back in the seat at lower speeds, the ones that rev harder give more top speed on the level. Of course if you want you can start dropping cams in them and get more power, though often they lose on the bottom you need to clutch them to engage a little higher....but they really fly then.
