Re: Onan V twin
Well it depends all a lot of things
Is your G2 a gas cart? what size is the shaft for the clutch? How good are your fab skills? |

Re: Onan V twin
If you mean a ~20hp v twin air cooled (or even water) sure it will work, if you can fit a clutch onto the shaft. The only problem you might run into is you might not be able to mod it for more rpm, and then your top speed will be limited. With a vanguard/honda/kohler you can put better pushrods/springs/etc and get more rpm, some you can put cams and all that for a lot more power....but just a rev kit will get you more topend which is all most people need (or want to pay for lol). I just put a 16hp clone in a G9, it will not rev much more than stock so around 30mph with 22s, waiting for it to break in more. However it has much more power anywhere under that. If you run a 20hp or larger some put high speed gears in and then you don't have a speed issue, as they have so much bottom end they can pull the tall gears at low speeds. If you want to climb hills and/or pull trailers like I do then many don't change the gears for a lifted cart because a rev kit will get you ~40 mph and thats not bad.

Re: Onan V twin
the G2 is gas.. I will get the shaft size. Fab skills are all right. One question will a Onan V twin go backwards?? or is it just forward?? The Onan motor is still part of a old Genset out of my motorhome.. The motor is OK just the gen. died..

Re: Onan V twin
Wayne, you will have a tough time with the crankshaft, they don't make a clutch for it so you will have to replace it, or have it turned down in a machine shop or somehpw make an adapter. And then you probably won't be happy with the responsiveness or the rpm's IF you can make it fit in the cart. Look for a different V=Twin engine.

Re: Onan V twin
generator motors have (usually) tapered shafts. that will be your first, and probably biggest problem.

Re: Onan V twin
Are you sure that's a V twin.... or is it an opposed twin? If it's opposed, there might not be room for it to clear the transmission with any available belt.
Either way, dedicated RV generators are made to run at 1800 RPM; so just getting to a respectable speed would be running you engine at double pace. |

Re: Onan V twin
Onan made lots of opposed twins, I have one in my mower. Since they are flatheads they don't get the rpm, at least not stock and I don't think you can mod them (well you can mod anything but I never saw parts or heard of it). A guy on here has posted he put an 18 B&S opposed in his yamaha, and simply uses a longer belt no problem. Those are virtually the same engine in size. What you will get with an onan twin is similar to stock speeds, but it will have lots of midrange power and be very smooth. Those twins run for a long time, in the mowers they sometimes got 3,000 hours out of them with an oil cooler...and in that particular mower it was underpowered it had a 62" deck which is a little much for 20hp. You could still put high speed gears in it or if you can fit 25/27 tires it will have more top end than stock.
I drove a cushman truckster with an onan twin in it, it ran good lots of power. Since they had the governor on them I don't know about more rpm, but I do know my onan loses power at 3600 it is much happier at 2500rpm or less. So sure it would be way more powerful than stock, if you want more rpm its not the ticket. |
