new project advice
This year I built my first golf cart. Pretty much from a $50 piece from craig's list... Ended up awesome and recently sold it for $3k. I really enjoyed the build and riding. Now I am looking to build a gas buggie. I plan on starting with a junker again around $500 and adding a new engine, lift, tires etc. I am going to use the cart for around the neighborhood and on my hunting lease. I have read a TON of threads already on other builds. I am not sure what "platform" to start with. I'm sure this may be a Ford/Chevy question, but I would really appreciate some feedback on some pros and cons of different makes/years. I am considering a power plant of somewhere between a 13hp Harbor freight special to a V-twin. I am looking for at least 30mph, but don't need much more than that. I am pretty handy and am pretty good at welding. If I go with a smaller (13hp) is there a real disadvantage to adding a few upgrades i.e. jet heavier valve springs and removing governor? I realize a twin will provide smoother power, but how much smoother? Their is a significant price difference and seemingly a lot more fabrication needed. I know this is a ton of questions, but I have been cruising the web for a new cart and don't want many regrets or redo's. Thanks in advance for any help/advice. I NEED ANOTHER RIG.... GOING INTO WITHDRAWS!

Re: new project advice
We would love to help on your next build. I prefer the Ezgo Workhorse for a build platform.... love the extra room in the engine bay and the total access to the frame....... Oh, and if you think of it stop by here and thank your favorite Golf Cart modification site.

Re: new project advice
I will make sure to contribute soon. Need to transfer some funds to paypal... worth all of the advice you alone have given! What are your thoughts on engine choices... I know that is an open ended question. Especially since I am ranging from a 13- a V_Twin. Will a "hopped up" 13-18hp rattle my teeth loose? but give me enough power? Can you build rubber mounts to help with this???

Re: new project advice
I have both, 18 hp v-twin vanny and a 16 hp clone. The clone has a 3 amp charging circuit which is not enough to keep the battery charged if you are running lights. IMO I would go with a v-twin vanny, smoother operation, more torque, 18 amp charging circuit.

Re: new project advice
Thanks New Guy! Yours was actuallt one of the ones I was looking at (Jeep). Besides the charging system, what other benefits do you get out of the V? Also... From reading, I gather that I need to locate an engine with a straight vs tapered shaft... Is this correct? One last thing, is fitting one of these monsters much harder than a clone. Sorry for so many questions. Just planning before spending.

Re: new project advice
Same amount of work to install either engine unless you buy the kit from CPP, then it's very easy. Yes, you want a straight shaft. Check into drive clutches before you buy an engine.

Re: new project advice
Would you mind clarifying what you meant about checking out clutches... Shaft size, manufacture? Also would thr new clutch work with the existing rear pulley on the axle?

Re: new project advice
I hate to see guys get a "good deal" on an engine and then discover there is no clutch to fit the shaft. It's much easier to buy the right stuff first time around.
