Default oil pressure guage on vanguard 23

I want to put some form of low oil protection on my 2000 vanguard 23hp. It has a remote oil filter mount with oil cooler. I see a 1/4 inch port with a threaded plug in the top of the oil filter mount. Can I use that port for a Pressure gauge? Will any gauge work? What is the normal operating pressure for that motor?

thanks

sorry I spelled gauge wrong in the title.

Your motor should already have a low pressure cut off, if that gives you a little more peace of mind. But to answer your question, Yes, you can use that port to run an automotive type gauge. Sun, Auto Meter etc with the plastic or bronze tubing, all should work fine. I can't say what your pressure will be exactly, it won't be as much as you think, mine is around 40 #'s but I run an external oil cooler. I bought a complete set on sale at an auto parts store. Even made the temp gauge work on the cylinder head, it's kinda cool

I was going thru the motor yesterday, prepping it for the hi rev kit from Tom. I have the fly wheel off with good views of the whole motor. Can you give me some direction on where that low pressure cut off would be located.
I will head to the auto parts store today, maybe I can find something on sale also.

You can also get an oil pressure sensor for an old car, say a '70 GM. The one for a dash light, you just wire a light through it and tee it into your pipe fitting for gauge. I know people that put a big red light on the dash with those mostly in case they get low oil or up on an angle/side hill. They go off at pretty low pressure about 5psi iirc. Just make sure that is not the plug for the spring and ball of the pump lol.

I put a cooler on my lawnmower, well it had the cooler but engine missing. I had to buy the part that goes in place of the filter and hoses to the cooler and remote filter, you can get all that stuff. It uses hydraulic lines like a snow plow/tractor/etc. The filter had to be remote also due to how it is mounted in there. But then its easy to change oil filter and the filter and lines also help cool it. In fact they mounted it so the air off the bottom of the cylinders blows on it, air is not near as hot as air off the heads. I can't really move it in that machine. All that stuff also increases oil capacity. I can say if I had the room in there I would have bought a filter mount for an old ford filter (or whatever common larger car filter), better yet overkill a diesel filter that takes over a qt of oil to fill it lol.

If you have it, it should be right there on the oil filter adapter. Should have an oil sending unit with a push on connection.

My motor does not have the cut off. I will concentrate on rigging that first, then maybe tee off a pressure gauge. Would this one work?

Most of the vangards came stock with a low oil shut off the port you are talking about is were it taps into the engine your local briggs dealer can supply you with the switch and you run a wire from it to the coil grounding
pin or spayed. This also wont let the engine start till theirs oil pressure
Happy Motoring

I picked up that oil pressure cut off switch for 10.00 and installed it. Works perfect. Thanks for the help.
