Re: 18 hp kohler motor mower to cart (VERTICAL SHAFT)
There's a few others that have started threads on this. I am very interested in it to.To my knowledge, know one here has actually done it.
I can tell you this, unless you have a lot of extra prts layin around, $300 is a very UNrelistic buget for this project. You will for sure need a new clutch, (or adaptor) Some kinda gear box, jack saft and chain maybe...... I plan on attemping it this summer, but, I haven't got a real plan put together yet... If you try it be sure to post losts of pics! |

It won't work.
By the time you find a rear end that you can somehow convert the vert to, it isn't the same as the drive train ..It would be like me sticking and old 454 in my Northstar Deville.. too much tooo involved. Just start looking around for a suitable 1" shaft horizontal motor, lots of folks repower with other engines that aren't vtwins. I think the Vtwin thing has to be a pretty strong desire more so that just a re power. That being said, if it is a twin sound and power you want, start looking around..you probably aren't going to find the really good deals very often , but they are out there.. I did not have the funds available about a year ago, and missed a beautiful low use Vanguard that had a cam, a rev kit, header and clutch for 450 bucks. I really wanted to help the guy out too..but I just didnt have it. The clutch was worth that...it was, the whole thing was like new. |

An old gearbox out of a lawn tractor would get you there using a idler for clutch. but room to do this, not with out moving engine forward.
I'm with the others here, different engine is the best way. Unless you just want something different. |

applications, and were and are horrible about case cracks and easily damaged from the outside..little rocks bust em. I thought about this whole thing.. a few have, yet to see one come to fruition, other that what "may have been one" , advertised out of our local rural Craigslist.. it was billed as a 'mud toy' that someone had put 33" tires on an old IHC lawn tractor.. However, the idea is there, because that is the only kind of transaxle that might make the trip, but it would have to be able to have at least one forward and one reverse, and all those I have seen that were belt driven by a vertical shaft motor, had a slew of little low speed gears in them. When I mean low speed, we're talking Looowww.. |

Re: 18 hp kohler motor mower to cart (VERTICAL SHAFT)
I was thinking about a tractor I had in the 70's. Was not a transaxle it had a transmission. Engine to trans was belt, trans to rear was chain. One day just for the hell of it I changed the pulleys around, did not take off to well but I could pass cars in the subdivision could use a live axle and gear however you like. would take a lot of fab work. It would be different a 5 speed golf cart

Re: 18 hp kohler motor mower to cart (VERTICAL SHAFT)
yeah.. I recall some old top loader type rear ends that might work..
LOT of changeroo going on just to use a vertical.. I bet if we dare someone hard enough and long enough it might damage their psyche to the point where they HAD to build it. I had an ex like that. |
