Default Maybe more dumb questions.

My big block project is at the point where I need a motor. Got the frame painted rear end spider gears welded up. What do you guys reccomend! Not real important about top end speed. just want low end power and maybe 25 to 30 MPH. What motor 16, 18, 23 vanguard? Modify from CPP a 16 vanguard? Stock Clutches? Tryin to stay married and keep the cost reasonable. Tire sizes pertaining to the horse of the motor? Its being built for runnin around fields some hills and on a frozen lake. Figure one of the more knowledgeable may be pleased with their setup who has similar uses. Any " cookie cutter" designs to follow? Thanks again this site is the best and really appreciate the curtious and technical responses for us newbies!

Oh one more thing the cart I have now has a 7 inch lift on it, stock motor plus bigger Mikuni and a home made exhaust. Runs pretty good. Is the long travel independent suspension that much better for the cost?

The better suspensions shine at greater speeds over rough terrain. Cheap is the clone, get a 16hp for under 400 with electric start, but you can get the adapter and run the stock clutch and generator so you might not need a clutch. Some carts have sucky clutches and might need one anyway. It has about double the power not much more speed unless you warm up the motor some. Next is get the 18hp vanguard with a rev kit, they really fly great top speeds. 23hp is going to have more torque, but more funding for that too.

do you mean the 16 HP Vanguard or one of the Home Depot clones? Can you run a stock clutch on a Vanguard?

HD sells the 15hp clone, its the same as a 16 I'm sure as my 16 says 15hp in the manual lol. Though I don't see it on their site now when I checked a couple days ago. I used a carolstream 16hp it was 380 with elec start I think they are cheaper now or were. Sure you can use a vanguard great to have a twin but price goes up. Any 1" shaft you can use, can put the CPP adapter on it $50 I think and mount your stock clutch. Some carts have that little belt not a 1 3/16" wide not sure how well those work some convert to the larger belt. On the yami the stock clutch is not bad with more power it does not bog at all no matter, but you can't adjust it to take off really hard like the aftermarket ones....if you want that. Imagine stock with a blower making double the power but everything the same....that is what the 16hp is like. It lays down at about the same rpm on top, so I am going to mill my head and port the pockets, and advance the timing and see what it does. If you get a clone break it in for a while a few people stuck a rod. We ran this for maybe two months and then you could feel it change and run better. Didn't trail ride it so not sure how many hours that was, lot of running up the driveways and next door. Search my 'clone specs' in gas yamaha and read about my install we fabbed it all. If you get a twin you can get parts from CPP I think they sell a whole kit too you don't have to make all the stuff. But we had something like $500 or less into it money is money. I'm doing mine and saving for another cart that I will go more wild on, I use this one for everything including yard work, towing, etc and want to keep it pedal start. Also the clones don't charge the battery much, I guess you can add another coil under the flywheel but still not much. If you keep stock starter/generator you don't have that problem in fact you don't even need the elec start either you can get the cheaper engine it was 250 from HD. We got the elec start in case we used the engine for something else later or wanted to swap it to key start some time. It was not that much more but if you buy the parts later its much more.
