Default 23hp briggs camshaft loose

pulled my camshaft today only to find the gear has been grinding into the cylinder jacket why?? Is there supposed to be a shim or washer of some kind on the end to hold it out? you can see how the 2 gears are not flush.I believe this engine was rebuilt at one time.

I have a 38000 series motor and it had a spacer shim of some sort in there.

Never seen one with a shim, Do you have the rest of the numbers? Theres about 40 versions for that model number. I would like to narrow it down

There is a 3 shim pack shown part # 807625 They are shown as going on the fan side of the crankshaft in the parts diagram. But the discription is "shim end play" and in the comments area it states "crankshaft or camshaft bearing"
The pic of the motor you show does not have a camshaft bearing, Just a bushing cast into the block.

Hard to tell from pics but looks like the boss in the block where the cam hits is worn strange, The gears should line up way better. With the cam installed do the cam lobes hit in the center of lifter or off towards the back side? Lobe must hit the lifters in the center or lifters will break after awhile. Also make sure crankshaft is in all the way and that crank gear is on all the way.

Does the gear come off the cam in these?

They show those shims off the end of the crank, but in a different box so not entirely clear where they go. But if the cam hits there the crank will not fix, either the cam is short or going into block too far? I assume the crank end and cam end are different sizes, for a shim.
